If you call from PA at 10:15 pm (Eastern), you're call won't go through.

If you're calling at the same time from IN, you're good. NICS has their operator workgroups segregated by the timezone they cover.

Just in case a newbie stumbles across this post, I'm not serious about this.

I ran into this policy this morning. I was at Walmart around 7 am, before the crowds get going and wanted to purchase CCI MiniMags for my 22 pistol. I was told by the employee at the counter they couldn't sell ammo or guns between 10 pm and 8 am. I was also told it had to be paid for at the gun counter and not up front. I walked out without it.

I've bought ammo at Wal-Mart at about midnight without a problem. I've also bought ammo at Wal-Mart and paid at the front checkout rather than the sporting goods counter. It has to be individual store policy or a misunderstanding of laws or policies.

Let me re-word... Does NICS operate the same hours?
Note: NICS is not the same as PICS

NICS = National instant check system
PICS = Pennsylvania instant check system


I loked it up and NICS is operational between 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Eastern Time

Has to be store policy or lazy employees, they shut me down for tying to buy paintballs after 10, never tried ammo yet though.

I guess they figure if you're in need of ammo (or paintballs) after 10pm that your intentions must be negative. Doesn't make much sense...

I used to regularly buy my ammo at 3 am when I left work and made my way to Walmart in Cranberry. I have never had any problems. I think it depends a lot on the clerk and how they feel about it, most stores dont have a "sports" clerk at night.
