NOT SURE OF YOUR POINT HERE. ARE YOU SAYING YOUR ARE NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR THE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO PERFORMANCE?

No! I'm willing to pay extra for looks: a gun that works well, and looks good. First consideration is how good is actually works, otherwise I'd just buy a cheap wall mounter.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT POINT, WHOLEHARTEDLY. AFTER PERFORMANCE THEN LOOKS ARE A DEFINATELY A PLUS. LUCKILY WITH EVERYONE MAKING RAILS AND FURNITURE WE CAN HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. FUNCTIONALBILTIY , FIRST THEN MISSION SPECIFIC ATTACHMENTS, WILL ADD TO THE OVERALL BEAUTY. MONEY CAN'T BUY YOU LOVE .. UNLESS YOU LOVE YOUR GUNS..

Willtallica:

Sounds like you have champagne taste, but your'e on a beer budget. Judging by your previous posts (example), you're likely going to become a serious collector in time. May I simultaneously offer my congratulations and sympathies?

In the meantime, consider setting up some kind of structure or plan to your collecting. If I were you, I'd hit the practical first, especially since it looks like the Democrats may take control of the government in the next two years. Then build out any specialty guns (sniping, whatever). Save the collectibles for last, especially the ones that are readily available and not on the gun-banner's radar. That way, if the Democrats fake right & break left again, you have all the high priority stuff you could have afforded anyway. If they come to Jesus and leave guns alone this time, you have guns you would have eventually bought anyway.

Looks like you recently bought a clean 98k, I'd grab some ammo while 8mmx57 is cheap & everywhere. That'll mean lots of quality range time over Christmas break, and an operational rifle if things ever got strange.

As a first hand witness & participant in the New Orleans & Katrina event, I can tell you that running out of ammunition is a Bad Thing. If you think the leadership & assistance sucked down there under Bush II, wait until $_it happens under a Democratic regime. Somalia will seem like a birthday party for Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

After listening to that the day after new years day I'm going to buy a Roman AK(-47 clone), and 760 8mm mauser rounds. Right now it's the worst time to ship, and except your merchandise to arrive unharmed (I work at feddex).

We'll be waiting for pictures. With the low cost of entry level digital cameras, you have no excuse for lack of pics...be safe, have fun.

I also think they are super cool rifles with that scope and everything else about them. They arent the most accurate and aren't the most reliable. Buddy of mine had one, it was kind of a problem child.

They look super sweet and are a little expensive for what you get in return.

I'm curious about this statement. Did your friend have a military issue SVD, or a modified civilian import (ie, "Tiger")? Was it 7.62mmx54R, or a Chinese NDM in .308? There's also a fair amount of confusion between Romanian FPK rifles & SVDs, mostly perpetuated by the distributors selling PSL & FPK rifles.

As with any enhanced-accuracy rifle, it won't shoot better than an ordinary hunting rifle with ordinary ammunition. These rifles require match grade ammunition, the SVD isn't an exception. Since 7N1 ammunition is very rare, it's very unlikely he was using the correct ammunition. Last known sources I'm aware of are J & C Sales and Chestnut Ridge Supply. This is the most common error I've seen in gun-zine articles about the SVD. Here are ten different range reports from SVD shooters.

The biggest limitations are the optics, lack of accessories and ammunition. The PSO-4 is a four power scope, there aren't a lot of aftermarket accessories for them and 7N1 ammunition is difficult to find, especially in quantity.

I have one ordered, (The Romanian PSL version) for $599 it's a decent value for me and if I absolutely hate it I can sell it and make a quick $100. It will look quite lovely next to its Romanian friends.
