Default Recommendation

I know that this will be a flooded thread, but I am looking for a recommendation for a .22 pistol. I actually said after my bought my .40, my next purchase was going to be a .22, just because it is a fun to shoot caliber, and is inexpensive. Of course the wife turned and asked, why not buy it first. I had no answer except, because I would never shoot anyone with a .22 that wasn't my friend.

I am looking for a variety of factors for the pistol. I do not want a range pistol (Mark series Rugers), I would prefer a semi auto, and would like it to be under $500. I also want something that shoots pretty good at 25 yards. It will be used to help hone my skills, and provide some degree of ability. Besides, I have a few people who want to go with me (non gunowners) and I want something to get them hooked with. (I know, most guys want MORE POWER and i will have the .40 for them after they show me they won't kill me or anyone else with the .22)

This confuses me. What do you want? Not a self defense gun and not a range pistol? What then?

Ok, yes, re reading my post, it was a bit ambigous....I have had a couple beers tonight, because tomorrow is thursday....NO PT!

I don't want a match style pistol. I am wanting a "fun" gun. I know...bad choice of words, and I don't know really how else to put it. I am wanting light weight, easy to maintain, nothing that looks like a raygun (see the match pistol). My dad had a Mark II, and something about it just didn't sit right with me. MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE was I did not like. The Mark IIIs feel a lot like them to me. I guess, if I have to, I can use if for home defense/concealed carry.

I picked up a Walther P22 a while ago. It's a very tiny gun ... what do you expect though it is a 22 after all It wasn't that expensive either .. well under $500

I've not had any problems with it and really enjoy taking it to the range. If you have a range near you that will allow you to check it out I recommend that you do.

I wouldn't consider the Ruger MK series "match" 22's. Not to sound like a jerk, but you have a lot of expectations for an under $500 pistol. You don't give many options because if you want to carry the 22 pistol...you are talking about a P22. There really isn't anything else that fits your specs. I wouldn't get a Beretta 22...too small for plinking and I'm not too fond of the short barrel.

You could look into a Browning Buckmark, but it looks similar to the MK series that you are trying to avoid. Why not buy a Glock or Kimber and get a 22 conversion kit.

That would be well over the $500 mark.
Smith & Wesson has some nice 22's, the Sig Mosquito has a decent price.

Because he might already own a Glock or Kimber...or you could find a used Glock and buy the 22 conversion kit.

The only S&W 22 that's good is the model 41...and he stated he didn't want a match pistol. Also, the 41 is too long to carry. Perhaps you should read the OP thread before you add you 1/2 penny to the conversation. The Sig Mos. is a junk IMO.

All true, but be, 'N.I.C.E.' A 22 long rifle caliber conversion kit for an existing 45 acp Glock or Kimber will cost, about, $230-$275 dollars.

The SIG, 'Mosquito' is, indeed, rapidly gaining a reputation as a piece of cast-metal junk.

Personally, I love my 70's vintage, S&W Model 41; it'll be one of the last guns to go. (Probably right after I do.)

I don't think a Model 41 is too big to carry, though; and I've got the 7 3/8" barrel w/ counterweight. I'm able to easily slip this pistol under my belt in a traditional, 'felony carry' without any problem. (You know who still uses a long-barreled, 22 long rifle caliber, Beretta Model 70S; and, they seem to be able to carry this fairly large pistol, discreetly, without any problem.)

My personal choice for a reasonably priced, all-around, 22 caliber pistol?

Got a good reputation; and it's under $350.00

I had actually looked at the Walthers the last time I was at the range. They didn't have much a selection .22s at On Target, but next time I make it to Bass Pro I will see what they have there. I hate going anywhere near the mall between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The .22 conversion is a great idea, but I do not have a 1911 or a Glock (yet).
