A great treatment of statistics and risk can be found in the very entertaining book "Freakonomics" by S. Levitt. He is part of the new school of economics that try to study modern behavior from the standpoint of incentives and costs.
There is a chapter titled "Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool?" that covers peoples skewed perception of risk. It is a great read for that chapter and the many other topics he covers. (http://www.freakonomics.com/thebook.php)
