Default 243 for chucks

Just bought a new Ruger Hawkeye in 243 for chucks/coyotes. Anybody use the Federal V-Shoks in either 55 or 70 grain yet? I have had good results with the Nosler Ballistic Tips (which Federal uses) in 223 w/55gr....never used in 243 though. Thanks,

I use 70 grain Nosler ballistic tips out of my .243, it hits like a Mack Truck!

Of course that's reloaded and hauling some serious Arse!

Thanks for the info. I don't reload anymore, but I'll pick up a box of factory 70's and try them.....should do well on the yotes also.

Oh heck yeah, should work pretty well for them, I know they kill woodchuck when you shoot them in the hind quarters.....and no..it wasn't intentional

The ballistic tips will work fine in .243, just as good or better than the .223. If you're trying out other bullet options, the v-max bullets will tear some stuff up too. I don't know if they make them in .243 but I would be surprised if they don't and that's the Sierra blitzking. My best friend reloads them for .22-250 AI and MAN those things are BAD, lol. We have hit coyotes and had exit holes larger than a grapefruit on the backside. That was when no bone was hit, behind the shoulder entrance, behind shoulder exit that was gaping. Best of luck to you and I hope you like it.

Yeah, the Hornady V-Max is a fine choice too....most any hollow point bullet will work just great on varmint...and since you are buying off the shelf...any of them will perform pretty well...if you were reloading the only thing i would tell you to stay away from are Sierra Match King Hollowpoints.....they are made for competition shooting, and not really hunting...and from my experience can be over driven to the point of explosion in the air before the target.

I've put two or three boxes of the 70 grain Nosler Balistic Tips through my Rem. 700 .243 and I like them a lot. I shot a groundhog last year that was less than 100 yards away and it pretty much cut the sucker in two.

I originally chose that load because it was the most accurate in my rifle. I don't reload rifle ammo yet and I don't hunt chucks very often, so I'm sticking to factory ammo for now.

Thanks for the info. I did look at V-Max rounds.....only choice was a 58gr with Moly Coat. I don't want to go through the break in process of Moly, or have to keep shooting Moly bullets afterwards. Hornady has factory 75gr hollow points I may try eventually. But for now I'm going to sight in with the 70gr Federal V-Shoks at 200yd zero. Just ordered a Nikon 6-18x w/side focus to stick on top.....hopefully be calling in some yotes weekend after next.....but I'm really itching for the hogs to start popping up in a couple months!

Also waiting for the Hornady Leverevoloution 22win mags to hit the shelves to try in my walking rifle....new season brings new toys!
