This was in the Reading Eagle today.
http://internetservices.readingeagle...ers/index.html Majority opposed gun-control bills Editor: I write in response to Mary Young’s column alleging I voted against my constituents’ wishes on two gun-control bills (“Survey critics firing blanks,” Reading Eagle, Dec. 15). Notwithstanding the push-poll CeaseFire PA survey results Young cited, the overwhelming majority of e-mails and phone calls I received on these bills were in favor of protecting Second Amendment rights and against more gun-control measures. Also, there is virtually no evidence that these proposals work. For example, South Carolina, one of the first states to impose a one-gun-a-month law, repealed it in 2004 because it was ineffective. A Philadelphia Inquirer article noted that all three states with one-gun-a-month restrictions had homicide rates above the national average. And guns are banned in Washington, D.C. What is the crime rate like there? I am not opposed to the concept of a mandatory-reporting law for lost or stolen weapons, but the current proposal criminalizes victims of gun theft and does nothing to prevent straw purchasers from claiming their weapons were stolen to avoid responsibility for illegally transferring them to criminals. Further eroding the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens will not save lives. We must deal with the social problems that lead people to violence. State Rep. I have written letters before (and will again) to those who are honest and forthright in government. I have told them that while I may not be one of their constituants, and unable to vote for them. If they ever run for higher office they have a suppoter here! |
