Default Asteroid May Strike Mars in Late January!

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/space/1...?eref=rss_tech

If they predict this like they do the weather...we better be worried! It will probably hit us!

Nice Find!! I always wondered why scientists are never able to give you a definitive answer. I mean theoretically you have the trajectory using red and blue shifts. YOu have the speed distance and size of mars vs. the path of the astroid. So why only a 1 in 75 chance? Maybe it's just a media hype and they know they're wrong but want the credit. I mean hey, there's a 1 in 2 chance that the sun might be hit with a piece of space dust... can i get a news article?

Ya gotta love it. They are predicting this the same way they predict the weather. It's a constantly changing prediction.

Quote:
A newly discovered hunk of space rock has a 1 in 75 chance of slamming into the red planet on January 30, scientists said Thursday.

Scientists tracking the asteroid, currently halfway between Earth and Mars, nitially put the odds of impact at 1 in 350 but increased the chances this week. Scientists expect the odds to diminish again early next month after getting new observations of the asteroid's orbit, Chesley said.
Watch the predictions and place your bets when the odds are in your favor.
They should have a pretty accurate prediction by January 31.

I think our taxes should be raised to help fund the rebuild of Mars.

Afterall, Martians are our friends.

These guys are calculating with magnitudes and variables beyond your comprehension. Given the size of space, a 1 in 75 chance of a cosmic collision is a relatively high probability.
