Wrong.....no one would be screwed.

You reported or will report the firearm as being stolen "when you discover it missing". Thats it.

Unhappy Re: Lost/Stolen Firearm Question

Okay. Went over to Bristol Twp PD. After 45 minutes the report was filed and the s/n was put into system.

Younger officer who took report was a little rude but bearable. Heard him tell Sarge he's not going to mention the car theft date in the report as that was 5 months ago.

Then I got:

Why did you leave it in your car and you just noticed it missing now? and at the end of the report taking process, he said 'Keep track of your guns better, if one of us end up dead because of it then whos faults that.'

Got to wait a day for a copy of the report.

Opinions.??

Just blow it off. You did your part. Regardless of when the gun was stolen, or when you reported it, if it was used for any kind of crime, you cannot be held responsible.

And you should have asked how reporting a firearm is going to report a crime from happening? Can't. No way possible is you making a report going to prevent a criminal from using a gun.

Just ignorant LEO, nothing new.

They're right in the sense of yeah, keep track of your guns and you have to admit maybe they have reason to be a little irritated (not your fault that it was stolen but there's another stolen gun out on the streets sort of thing -- that's irritating).

Take your lumps such as they are and learn what you can from the experience.

I had a bunch of valuable tools stolen out of my car once and had a truck stolen once and I know how much it sucks to be a theft victim.

This too will pass.

"It's the fault of the savage little cop-killing scumbag gun-stealing ape who actually committed the murder, officer, or are you one of those macro-structuralists who want want to blame the crime on the "social roots" rather than the individual actor?!"

On second thought, your way of handling it was a lot better. I'd just like to see the reaction to that statement.

Got the report copy. (cheesy little thing) last week. Has the NCIS file number on it and does ref. July 07 missing as of date and last seen in my car.

So he (officer) did OK.

Still sucks its missing. Now I got to buy another Glock 30. I might get an XD45 compact instead though. I Had an XD9 back a few years ago an loved that. I'd imagine the XD45 would be a nice little gun. Decisions, decisions.

Its the sying HATE THE MESSAGE, NOT THE MESSANGER.
