Churches seem to be right up there with schools & malls as far as senseless violence goes. Packing in church might be a good idea these days.

In Colorado, an armed Female Security member stopped the shooter after only one fatality had occurred. How many more lives would have been lost had she not been prepared and willing to stop the creep...

Kel-tec PF-9 in a smart carry. I am on my Church's security team so I have to carry every time I am there. After what happened in Colorado, we have already decided to take it up a notch. Nothing overt due to opinions that range from"it's a sin not to trust God and carry a weapon" to "your just being paranoid" but you can garantee that we on the security team take it seriously.

Yes, I think that it is sad that I have to do this but I also believe it is very necessary.

Someone mentioned the shepard protecting the flock....we look at ourselves as sheepdogs! It's the job of the sheepdog to protect the sheep from the wolves even when the sheep do not see the need or not like that the sheepdog is there.

It's a sad day in Colorado...my thoughts and prayers go out ot them.

All of a sudden a car screeched to a halt right behind me...the woman hid behind me...and what turned out to be her husband pulled a knife and held it to my face. I had no means of self defense, other than my hands and my guitar case. I wish I was carrying that day. After a few tense minutes he reached around me and grabbed his wife and threw her into his car and drove off. I called the police but don't know what ever came of it. My point is that we have the right to defend ourselves no matter where we are. But we also have the right to choose when and where to carry. So I respect your choice not to carry in church.
That's an interesting story. I didn't take into account the scenarios involving the church as sanctuary for people in danger. Events like this are probably pretty common for the clergy.

Your church has a security team? Is it in an urban area? What does it entail?

I don't know, but I like it!

AT our old church we didn't have security, but a few of the ushers were younger guys who did a great job keeping order. Thinking back on it I wouldn't be shocked at all if a few were carrying, but the pastor wouldn't have ordered that.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Jeanne Assam appeared before the news media for the first time Monday and said she "did not think for a minute to run away" when a gunman entered the New Life Church in Colorado Springs and started shooting.

Assam appeared before the media with applause and said "God guided me and protected me."

She described how the gunman, Matthew Murray, entered the east entrance of the church firing his gun.

"There was chaos," Assam said, as parishioners ran away.

"I saw him coming through the doors" and took cover, Assam said. "I came out of cover and identified myself and engaged him and took him down."

Assam had several years of experience in law enforcement and is licensed to carry a weapon. She attends one of the morning services and then volunteers as a guard during another service.

"I give credit to God," Assam said. "God was with me. I didn't think for a minute to run away."

The victims killed in the Colorado Springs shooting were identified Monday as sisters Stephanie Works, 18, and Rachael Works, 16. Their father, David Works, 51, suffered two gunshot wounds -- one to the abdomen and one to the groin -- and was listed in fair condition on Monday. They were shot in the parking lot as they were getting into their van.

"Our concern is for our family that lost two teenage daughters. Our hearts are grieving this morning for them," said New Life's Senior Pastor Brady Boyd. "You can imagine, as parents, losing two children while coming to church, just showing up for a worship service, not bothering anyone."

He called her "a real hero" because Murray "had enough ammunition on him to cause a lot of damage."

Boyd said she was the one who suggested the church beef up its security Sunday following the Arvada shooting, which it did. The pastor credited the security plan and the extra security for preventing further bloodshed.

Not urban but suburban. Very large congregation with an extremely large youth group.

Again, sad but necessary. I wish I did not have to serve in this role but feel compelled.

Can't go into details what our security measures entail but suffice to say, some aspects you see, most you don't. Best to keep it that way.
