Default Non-Toxic Cleaning Materials

So in doing a bit of research on the gun cleaning materials, I have found they are pretty bad for you, not that I couldnt tell that from their smell. Now I use gloves/mask/glasses when I clean, but I was wondering if there were any cleaners that werent so bad for you?

Every cleaner that appears non-toxic seems to be just as bad as the next. For example, M-pro 7/Hoppes Elite claims to be non-toxic but is extremely toxic as it contains a chemical called 'Diethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether' (http://hazmap.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/ha...Agents&id=1178). I just cant seem to find one that is safe. Are there any alternative methods that work and wont destroy the firearm (or myself)?

I don't know of any off hand. Your exposure should be very minimal. Clean in a well venilated area. Wear some type of chemical resistant gloves, and you are probably just as safe as cleaning the bathroom.

and hey, that great Hoppes #9 smell comes from good ol' banana oil. heheh

Slip2000's 725 cleaner is supposed to be non-toxic.

Ballistol.

Developed by the Germans In WW1 and used throughout WW2. All natural and it also was used to clean leather and wood. Great product.

+1

I use it often. The only problem I have is that it smells very, very funky. Like old, sweaty socks funky.

Mirachem works well, and they'll even send you a generous free sample to try it out:

M-Pro 7 is hard to beat for what your looking for.

Simple green works in a pinch to but it stinks and you must be sure to oil thoroughly afterwards.

Why not try Weapon Shield CLP out?

I love the way it's worked and kept my firearms running without excess carbon build up over each consecutive cleaning and shooting. It really does work. Here is a link to get a free sample if you're like me and are skeptical...
