dogs are one of the best home defense tools there is, even if its the nicest dog in the world, it still knows when someone is in or around your house and you can base your actions on that.

Hell....my dog would only try to lick someone to death....
Actually, she's pretty good about barking when strangers come around

I too keep my pistol under a pillow, but not the one that I sleep on. A Surefire is also under there. It's the same gun as the CCW, I don't have a special house pistol, that's the 12GA. Though I'm thinking about using the AR for HD too.

you'd be surprised. i had a lab growing up that was the friendliest dog on the planet. she loved both people and other dogs and loved to play with both.
one night, though, i was walking her and another dog came running out of the woods at us with seemingly bad intentions. before i even knew what was going on my dog had become possessed by lucifer himself and took off after that dog like a bat outta hell. i couldn't believe it was the same dog i had always known. both of them disappeared into the dark woods, and i was pretty worried, but pretty soon my dog came trotting back out tranformed back into the friendly playful face licking machine she always was, satisfied, i guess, that i was safe again. i only saw her get anything like that one other time when someone appeared to be physically harming my sister (btu was just really playing around). my dog's hair stood on edge and she started growling something fierce and lunging at the guy--clearly meaning business. it wasn't actually a bad situation though, and after everyone just kinda stopped and stared in shock at her, my dog instantly realized the threat was over and went back to being her normal self. so, you just never know what a dog will actually do when it feels someone it loves is threatened until it actually happens. |

i wouldn't rely on a dog for home protection other than help on alerting me.. But I've got a great dane, english mastiff, and a pitbull, and they are very very protective, if they know you and have known you for a long time their fine but other people can't get close to them so it wouldn't surprise me to come home to see a robber dead. I mean when i play with my english mastiff and really get rough with him when he jumps at me and stuff its somewhat scary but luckily they all know to stop when i say stop. And my great dane is a really sweet dog with me, licks my face and all that but she's crazy, she's big, and shes all black, I always say I am gonna take her on a dog talent show, and as he talent she can make kids cry... and the pitbull has shown her pitbull side, and you never can know with them. But I know for a fact if they wanted to, they could kill someone they are big and strong.. I kinda doubt they would but you never know what would happen if some idiot kids broke into the wrong house during christmas break

Strange that nobody considered their wives instead of a dog.
I mean, the dog can't shoot, but my wife can, and she sleeps lighter than the dog! Doesn't matter if the firearm is under my pillow or across the room... I'M SLEEPING. I hear NOTHING. Moving it even further away would not make me any more likely to awaken. She jokes that if anything "happens", she'll have to shoot the intruder and then wake me up to call 911. It's a team effort. She's got my back in the night, I've got things covered by day. ![]() Oh, and LRT is right about the dog. Ours is the happiest, face-lickingist dog on earth. He just turned three and he's begun to surprise us by alerting/barking/bristling when he hears a strange noise. I never would have guessed he had it in him, but now I'm seeing him act as if to say "You have been good to me, I won't let anyone harm you." It's hard to say what a happy dog would do to an uninvited guest.

I'm reading alot of posts with people sleeping with their guns under their pillows. How can you do that? I must need a new mattress or pillow. That gun would not be under there when I woke up. God knows where it would end up. Has anyone who sleeps with it under their pillow ever woke up to a loud crashing sound from it hitting the floor? I'm being serious too.
I hate the night stands my wife picked out, they look more like tables. It's an open design and has a small lower second tier that is totally useless for anything except, as it turns out...my gun. I have 2 toy poodles(go ahead, I can take it) They let you know whats going on. They have different barks for different threats. You always know just how close someone is. I guess everyones dog is like that but it's pretty cool. They're good watchdogs. They only weigh 4 pounds though, so I'm glad I have that little shelf beside me!

The "sleeping with a gun" thing puzzles the hell out of me too.
