Question Target/sniping stock forAR-15?

My has finished the lower half of his AR-15 and is now looking at stocks. He wants to make this into a long range precision shooter so he's curious as to what kind of stocks are available for this purpose. I'm trying to help him out with this and immediately stumbled upon the CAA SRS and Magpul precision stocks. Those are spiffy, but does anyone else offer anything else comparable?

Just use the A2 and adjust the scope heigth so the cheekweld is perfect. No funky gizmos and no added weight. Brownells lists ring heigths so you can use an old pair of rings and have a good idea.

If you really want the most in adjustability, you can go here:

No, it does not need to be tactical looking. I'm not sure that he cares about extra weight either.

He doesn't like the collapsible M4-style stock on my Bushmaster and was actually intending to get regular A1/A2 stock (no idea what the differences are) until he saw the SRS advertised on the back cover of a magazine. He was very interested in the excessive adjustability...right up until he saw just how much they're asking for it. He also sucks at internet shopping so I did a little poking around for him and the cheapest I could find an SRS was $340. Yikes! The Magpul PRS stock is, relatively speaking, much cheaper, I found a site selling them for $180. Even still, we both agree they are are both entirely too salty.

I suspect he'll end up throwing on an A2 stock, we were just wondering if there were any additional alternatives worth looking at.

The magpul is the ultimate in precision rifle stocks for the AR platform. Does anyone really "need" one? If I were a SWAT precision marksman I'd insist on one but for a civilian hobbyist it's probably not a necessity.

The fixed A1 and A2 stocks will give provide a good cheekweld but both, and particularly the A2, may be too long depending on the shooter. In prone, a shorter LOP is even more important than when shooting from the other traditional positions so unless he is very tall with long arms the A2 is probably going to be too long. The A1 is probably better at 5/8 inches shorter.

If the A1 is too long, a collapsible is probably going to be needed. However, so long as the scope doesn't sit too high due to having a large objective diameter, the cheaper magpul CTR, Tango Down or Crane will be fine.

Hmmmm, so the A1 is shorter, eh? That's good to know, as it would appear that my dad definitely favors a shorter length of pull because years ago he had a smith hack off a significant chunk of the stock on his 700 to compensate for the recoil pad that was going on it. Even with the recoil pad, it's still shorter than the factory length.

Who knows, Christmas is coming so maybe I'll just get him the Magpul.

The A1 stock is 5/8" shorter, thats it.

as for the Magpul, I have one, its fantastic, I wont have another on a precision AR15....like my homebuilt version of the SPR

Very spiffy looking rifle. I showed that picture to my dad and he is planning something quite similar looking, minus the tacticool handguard.

The Sully stock is always an option.

As Tony mentioned the A1 is a great stock and somewhat of a little "secret". It fits most people better than an A2...especially in prone. Makes one wonder the reason behind the A2 Someone in Congress probablly decided the A2 was "better"

Wasn't Congress, it was the Marine Corp.
