I agree that the consequence was a definite over reaction on the School Districts part. I also believe the situation would have been better served as a learning experience for the child (ex. child sitting down with Counselor, etc. and the situation discussed).
Unfortunately, I also believe that the consequence was a "necessary step" on the School Districts behalf. In today's society schools are faced with taking on the role of "teacher" and "parent." Obviously, there are wonderful parents out there such as yourselves that appropriately guide there children through life. At the same time, there are just as many parents that are uninvolved, leaving their precious children to figure life out for themselves. Obviously the school can not raise these children for their uncaring/unprepared parents, but they must guide these children as best they can. This leaves the schools as the "parent" seen under the "microscope." The action/reaction of the schools may be seen as over reaction/actions, but they may be the very steps that are taken to keep "your" child safe. I think this is where you all blast me , but remember, I agree with all of the above post, I just think these types of reactions by the schools are "necessary evils" of todays society.

Also, it is important to remember we are all reacting to the writer of this particular article, not necessarily the school. The media as usual has a way of putting their own spin on things by the tone they set.
Are we responding to the agenda of the writer of the article, or of the school? Maybe a little of both.

ya know, i read over that and i just shake my head... I guess it's a difference in where, and how you live and raise your children. When my uncle moved from pennsylvania to new hampshire, his neighbors literally locked their doors because he brought his firearms with him. Now, i know i'll hear some heat from saying this, but the school district had a job they had to do. If they set out those zero-tollerance rules, they have to abide by them, no matter who the child is. But, i think they went a little overboard in the fact that it was just a drawing. If the child was saying he was going to bring a gun in or whatever... then yeah sure, but this is just a little overboard in the fact that it's a drawing...

What I find truly disturbing is the fact the image displayed in the Washington Post article is in fact "NOT" the drawing done by Kyle Walker. The Washington Post choose to post a totally unrelated drawing that shows graphic violence with helicopters, armed GI's , some sort assault vehicle with a machine gun attached.
More disturbing are the figures lying on the ground bleeding RED in a black and white drawing. Did the Post deliberately post this drawing to make the child's drawing seem more nefarious. I think so. You have to click on the link in the story "Stick Drawing" to see the actual crude doodle this kid drew. I think his parents should sue the Washington Post for slander! Here is the actual drawing: http://gothamist.com/attachments/jen...10_drawing.jpg
