Need some help in selection of a gun safe

I have been in need of a safe for some time now and it is the number one priorty on my list of things to get. I recently saw the stackon safe at Dick's Sporting goods and it is in the right price range and the right size for my collection.(50+) I am wondering you view of it's qualities and bad sides as well. I understand that Amsec is the premier safe, I have one of those for files already. I thank all the members here for their views and thoughts.

I always thought that the stack-on stuff was a locking cabinet. Not a safe.

Stack on also makes safes. It's a reasonable, inexpensive safe, but it depends on what kind of protection do you want? Do you want fire protection? Really strong theft protection? A Stack-On safe will do if you're on a low budget, but there is better stuff out there. With safes, you typically get what you pay for.

stackon is fine for a starter safe but if you want a true fire, theft protection safe. look into sentry, or liberty even a cabela's safe which are built by liberty, or for the ultimate in protection you can have an addition built of 3-1/2 feet of concrete with a steel browning safe door and steel reinforced jambs built into the con crete.

I have a triple fire lined heritage safe. I love the thing, just wish I had bought bigger backe when I did buy it. The collection keeps growing so bigger would have been better.

Anyway Something is better than nothing. I have not looked at the stackons, but you can compare alot online. Do a search for heritage safe company.

I like the layout options for mine. I also like the fact thet it has a nicer interior than the others I have looked at. Most have that horsehair speaker box carpet stuff. Mine has a valore like material, gives it a classier look. The exterior is finished with goleleaf, nice antique/old fashon look. Being it is in my living room it is a focal point. The other thing I like is the weight, and other safety features.

Alot depends on your budget, what ball park are you looking to stay in ?

It is all about the money. For the stack ons you need to bolt them to something solid or weight them to prevent them from being carried off. As to fire protection, big 0. If you are looking to keep the local crackhead from running off with your guns, it will do fine. If you expect them to stop a pro with the time to open it then you need more. If your collection is worth it be sure that your homeowners ins. is up to date. Most companies will want you eyes for a rider to the policy. Even the NRA plan is costly. Many ins. compaines will also give you a hard time if the insured items where not secured in some way. The stack ons are not the best, but they are far better than a wood rack on the wall.

i have a treadlock it holds 14ish long guns weight is going to keep it form being carried away was looking at a champion and got this one instead was a few bucks less, a litle shorter than the champion in the overall height and the door doesn't swing 180 only 90 degrees at fully open

Take a good look at them. Made in CHINA. Crappy outside hinges.

Unfortunately, for me at least it came down to something of a financial question. I certainly wanted a buetiful $1850 safe but I couldn't affort one of those any more than I can afford a $1850 Les Bear 1911. My collection is not really that large and I have mainly handguns so for now I am managing with a 12 gun Sentry Safe. I purchased it at Home Depot of all places. I just checked their web site and they do not appear to still carry these safes any longer but Loews does. I purchased a 2nd one in August as a gift for my son. Home Depot had them for just under $400 but I used a 10% off coupon so that helped a little. I'll probably upgrade some day but for now this meets my needs.

Cabela's has a huge selection of guns safes and they do have sales. I would look there.

also any more input on the type of lock weather electronic entry or dial.
I have a electronic on my amsec and it seems to work well enough?

also will the waterproof seal truly keep the moisture out or is it still neccesary to have a dri-rod in the safe?

last question is it worth while to keep ammo in a separate safe?
