I'm remined of the words of the late great Robert Heinlien. "Beware of strong drink. it may cause you to shoot at tax collectors, and miss."

Mtbkski:

Good debate. Thanks for pointing that out. I agree with the argument you made; being legally intoxicated will be a huge complication in someone's defense if they have to shoot. In Pennsylvania, we have the freedom to use our own judgment in this regard, and someone's state of intoxication doesn't invalidate that self-defense defense in court, but it does increase the probability that you will be charged, that you will be convicted, and that you will be sued.

I agree with folks that argue it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 in that situation, but folks should be aware they are making their lawyers job much harder if they drink and have to shoot someone in self-defense.

I carry whenever I can, even if I am going to a bar and having a few drinks. But if I plan on drinking more than a few (to the point I can't drive) I choose to go unarmed. I suppose it is a bad choice if something were to happen. And considering the places that I usually go are ones where things are more likely to happen. But as others have said, I do not feel that I should be carrying when I am drinking just as much as I feel I shouldn't be driving.

With that said, it seems that because of this, the more I carry, the less I drink. Meaning that I find that I will choose to carry and drink less on a more regular basis. I don't know if it is just growing up or choosing to be protected, and the cost of that is drinking less. I don't know. Regardless, this is my feelings on the matter.

zef_66, I do the same as you do. Even if I am going to a bar and planning on having a few drinks, I put the gun in the trunk so on the drive home, if pulled over, I can tell the officer that I "do have a loaded weapon with a permit, but I have had a couple of drinks, and made the decision to put it in the trunk before I left for safeties sake."

How can they harm you for that?

Zef_66,
I have found the same to be true for myself.
I definately restrict my consumption when carrying.
That is not a negative in my case! ;-)
Good luck to you,
mrwildroot
