Default prices of AK's going up soon?

This is purely out of "i heard a guy say this" information. I was at a gun show recently and the fella instructed me to "buy an ak soon from him or anyone else because nato is imposing a treaty that will jack the price up 100-300 dollars per ak."

Is there any truth here or any kind of law/regulation that is in development?

I doubt NATO (details) could do much to domestic arms production, as NATO is a treaty focusing mostly on military & political cooperation & standardization between participating nations. I did a search on their website and nothing likely popped up.

Also note AKs are made inside the US, it's unlikely an outside party could have much influence on domestic arms manufacture. For a while, the Russians were trying to claim royalty rights on non-Russian made AKs, but didn't get any traction after the world stopped laughing.

What could endanger AKs is when Jackass season (link) begins in 2009. The first likely blow is an import ban on anything that's part of, looks like, smells like or touched an an AK as far back as 1946. On that thought, I recall AK parts importation may already be restricted or stopped. Following this would be heavy pressure from the white house to pass another assault weapon [sic] ban, except sans sunset provision. As long as ex post facto is recognized, existing AKs will become very valuable.

The President has exclusive control over importation, and she will almost certainly use it to telling effect. Given that all presidents are appointed by congress (details) and tend to follow party lines, the outcome of the 2008 Presidential election was likely determined in the last congressional election.

Expect the reports of school shootings to dramatically rise next summer as the left-biased media rolls out the carpet for the new regime bent on protecting us from ourselves. Unfortunately, the desired effect is shock and outrage. As school shootings become mainstream, a new weak target will be selected. Who knows? Churches, retirement communities, hospitals - ?

Summary: I would, and will, buy another AK soon but we have at least another year before things get bad.

Interesting thoughts, thank you for the insight. You are right in your assessment of what NATO can and can't do. The import ban sounds like what this guy was talking about, although the fact he had such an urgent tone in his voice makes me wonder. I also could not find anything on nato's website. sounds like an ak is a good investment regardless, im sure they wont be legal forever.

There's no shortage of carnival barkers at gun shows. They're pushing for sales, not political awareness. While gun show bravado is specious at best, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Sounds like high pressure sales tactics to me. You should take offence to someone treating you this way! Either they have been given bad info, or they think you are stupid.
I hate B/S

But everything goes up!

They are going up and have. Century reported they were raising prices due to price increases from their suppliers...aka imports. After checking a few prices on their website, looks like they are up $30-60 at least.

As others have stated - classic sales pressure tactics. I used to be an FFL and used to sell at the PGCA shows all the time. I'd say anything to get you to buy my crap.
