I'm adept at metallic reloading and cast my own bullets, so I'm not green as grass.

However, I've never done any shotgun loading and I'd like to feed my 12GA and 20GA.

For birdshot and target loads- it's far cheaper to buy loaded shells then futz around making them up in the limited quantity I intend to shoot.

However, I DO want to shoot buckshot and slug loads and they're not so cheap to buy.

Anybody in western PA / eastern Ohio load shotshells?

I'll be glad to bring my lee loadall and all the gear with me to your location and supply pizza/ beverages in exchange for an hour or so of experienced eyes guiding me.

whaddaya say?

Have you ever thought what is one of the most complete book on Winchester Commemoratives? I guess nobody would argue that Tom Troland's book is the one that you will turn to when you need to refer to some authority in the field.
And it is really great that the book finally has been updated and there is volume 2.
It looks really worth having. Lots of information, colorful pictures. I got one like that for my dad as a gift and he was just happy. Said I should have gotten at least 2 or 3 copies as he wanted to present them to his friends.
If you have volume 1 you might as well consider to get the updated guide from the leading expert in this field. I've come across the book here - Winchester Commemoratives

If anyone has advice on similar books I would love to know, really? I am sure my dad would be happy.

I was able to purchase a box of HSTs about a month ago in person at a store. No questions asked. Now however looking online and other places i find this disclaimer:

HST Ammunition can only be sold to LE Agencies and individual officers (with proper ID). There will be no exceptions.

If i were to use this ammunition defensively would i be facing legal consequences because it is intended for LE only, and how was i able to purchase it in store without being a LEO?
Thanks,
So what is the best buy for the money? I want something reliable that I don't have to screw with everytime just to make it work correctly. I was looking at the Dillon 550/650 but is anything cheaper as good or better?

I picked up a old wood Cannon Ammunition Crate from a thrift store the other day. I was wondering if anyone has an idea if it has any value. I bought it simply because it would make a cool cabinet for gun supplies, but notices the manufacture date of 1-51. Not sure if these are common or rare. Just wanted to make sure before I modify it into a cabinet. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

All my mags were the 4th Gen type and on the rear had a little 1 next to the Glock logo. The mags I got back from Glock appear identical except they have a little 2 next to the logo. Anybody know what these numbers are for? FYI, got the new mags back from Glock in less than a week, outstanding customer service.

Thinking about getting this press. Would have two very different expectations:

- Crank out .45 ACP efficiently (400 rounds per hour?)
- Load accurate (sub MOA) 5.56x45 & 7.62x51

Can this presses perform these duties? Would the optional cased feader be necessary (adds mucho $$$). Alos, a while back I thought that Hornandy was giving away some bullets when you purchased the press, but cannot seem to see these deals any more.

Thanks,

I can only remember ever having one centerfire dud. A round of 9mm Remington UMC, which is sitting on my loading bench so that some day I get around to breaking it down for components. I've had lots of bulk .22LR duds, but just the one centerfire round.

I've documented about 6000 rounds of factory 9mm, add another 1000 of UMC .45ACP, 500 Miwall Reloads, and 100 Federal HST, 1250 rounds of LC and Q3131A 5.56mm and some Winchester value pack .223 and some Centurion. Probably half a dozen 30 round mags full of surplus 7.62x39mm, and about 300 rounds of 5.45x39. Before all that, a few thousand rounds of mixed pistol ammo while I was renting guns and shooting Dad's. Reloads - 11,150 9mm, 930 .45ACP, 450 .223, 50 .308.

So yeah, a lot of money turned into noise and smoke.

Just curious about the experiences of others.

Has anyone ever observed Federal .22 LR hollowpoints actually expand?

I have shot a verity of media from telephone books to 6x6 wood. I have retrieved the .22 LR bullets for examination and not once have I seen any expansion. It is funny that I have actually seen more deformation at the tail end of the bullet for some reason. Many times I have seen it flatten as if the back half of the bullet was put in a vice. I sometimes find the penetration more impressive then any expansion.

I did the same test with .22 Mag. No expansion there either. Just deeper penetration. It seems to hit harder too. I have not been able to measure if the hollow points transfer more energy vs the FMJ. Since neither was actually making all the way through the 6x6 wood blocks, I would think that both delivered the same energy.

I have also test fired a lot of cheap .357 hollowpoints. The $17 per box one's with aluminum casings. They do expand, but it is usually just on one side. Nothing close to a nice mushroom.

I am wondering if the results of these tests would be any different on flesh and bone. The experimentation I have done so far with cheap ammo shows that there is no difference... or hardly any difference between FMJ and Hollowpoints.

Note: I tested the .22 LR, .22 Mag and .357 Mag hollowpoints shooting from a revolver. I do not know if shooting out of a rifle would have changed the results. I will test that next time.

The link below is very good at instructing you on the use of the gauge and explains shoulder set back of cases with FL dies. Good read even if you don’t use the Gauge.
If you think this is something you would be interested in, midsouth shooters sell it for about $35.00; you get 5 bushings for most of the popular rifle rounds for this price.
