Anyone have recommendations on a preserve for Russian boars, experience to share good and bad?
One fellow mentioned boars in Georgia too...but prefer something closer.

Just wanted to give a big THANK YOU to the PAFOA hunting community for the help and encouragement to process our own deer this year, I probably wouldn't have done it without you guys

Especially Sandcut and thanks for the offers of assistance!

Just to give some idea:

We've done 5 deer so far, I'd estimate around 140 pounds of ground, easily 20 - 30 pounds of ribs, roasts and backstraps.

Total costs so far:

Grinder - 130.00
Knife set - 50.00
Gambrel and Hoist - 20.00
cutting boards - 20.00
Wax paper and bags - 35.00
Pork - 60.00

After cabelas discounts, points, and gift card the grinder, knife set, and hoist were all free :P

Total invested: 315.00

Total cost to have 5 deer done at the butcher = 5 x 75 = 375

yup, we are over 60.00 to the POSITIVE already this year, all the equipment has already paid for itself easily... awesome, just awesome!

Anyone use them?

I'm considering purchasing a pair for deer season.

I have two issues

First and most important I suffer from sweaty feet. I gave up on the popular rubber type boots for archery and other hunting seasons because of this.
No matter what type of sock combo I used, once the boot got sweaty my feet got cold no matter what the temp. 50deg or 15 deg. It didn't matter and it didn't take long. Couple hours tops. For this reason I stuck with leather boots for the last 15+yrs. I'm sick of spending a small fortune on waterproof leather boots that are waterproof for a few seasons. I hunt a lot so they get used often.

Second I do prefer a laced boot just because slip on boots when humping up steep hills or deep snow my feet tend to "swim" around the boot which seems to cause fatigue. It depends on the boot design.

The muck boots I believe are mostly neoprene type material which breaths well. 20 or more years ago I had a couple pair of leather boots that had a neoprene insert.
Feet stayed warm, dry all day long, so for this reason I'm kicking the muck boot around

Hello everyone,
I recently took my hunter's safety class and today got my license and doe tag. I have wanted to hunt for a few years but was always at school during hunting season. This year I am finally home and will be able to participate in the hunt!
I do have several questions. I know my doe tag is for WMU 5C (Chester, Berks, Montgomery, Bucks, and Lehigh counties). My friend has a house on about 8 acres in Thornbury township, Delaware county. If I were to get a doe tag for WMU 5D, would I be able to hunt on his property? From my understanding as long as I am further than 150 yards from any house and am not shooting through that "protective bubble" I am ok. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I have been talking to one of the bartenders at work and he said his buddy who has been hunting for years would take me but I have yet to get in contact with him. Anyone here want to take me hunting for my first time? I have a .30-06 which I know I can't use in 5C or 5D, but if I traveled a bit to get an antlered deer.

At this point I am just rambling. Just looking for a little information about the whole process. If anyone would be interested in taking me, please shoot me a PM and we can discuss the idea. I have been around firearms since I was 12 and would be happy to demonstrate my competency before going on a hunt.

Driggs boy shoots bear on family's porch

Published: Friday, November 13, 2009 11:22 PM MST
An 11-year-old boy killed a bear at point-blank range last Wednesday night after it wouldn't leave his family's porch.

The boy was at his home near Driggs with his younger sisters and after seeing the bear on the front porch and not being able to get it to leave, the boy retrieved a gun and killed the animal.

The family declined to comment and wished to remain anonymous.

Fish and Game Conservation Officer Doug Petersen said the black bear had been a problem in the area near the county transfer station, and he and Fish and Game Officer Lauren Wednt had set up a trap earlier in the week.

"The bear had been hanging around and we got multiple complaint calls," said Wendt. The bear had been getting into garbage cans and bird feeders in the area.

Petersen said officials may have had to put it down anyway. He said that in situations where the bear has been a problem around humans or threatens human safety, they usually don't issue citations.

"Human safety is a higher priority," said Petersen. "We're concerned with how bears are managed and we want to live in harmony with them."

The boy and his family are not in any trouble, and Petersen said he issued them a permit to keep the bear. Usually when a bear is put down by Fish and Game they sell the hide at a state auction, Petersen said. Petersen said the family reported the bear Thursday morning. Fish and Game trapped and euthanized another problem black bear about two weeks ago, after the bear reportedly let himself into a home. Petersen said it's normal for the animals to move from higher elevations this time of year.

"We don't like to see them down this low," said Petersen. "But it's not uncommon."

I have had a lot of time to hunt. I've been out of work for about 4 weeks now since I haven't gotten any contracts. So I've been fishing and hunting as much as possible.

To start out with I have been doing a bit of pheasant hunting.

Then on the 5th 6th and 7th my father and I went to our property in Wayne county for a little bit of turkey hunting. On friday the 6th I hit this guy with a 2oz. load of 5 shot from my 12ga 3.5" mag.

Then on tuesday the 10th I had 4 seperate bucks under my stand and I decided to take the 7 point. Well he would be a 7 point if he had not broken of his brow tine. There are several bigger bucks on the property that I archery hunt but I have decided to wait until next year to see if they can become something truly impressive. There are 3 other bucks that I see daily just like this 7 so I figured he would look good in my refigerator. Who knows, maybe I'll get a chance at a bigger one in MD or NY later this year.

I also got a doe but I didn't take any pics, she was small and wasn't too impressive for picture taking. Either way she will be very good on the dinner table. Hopefully my November luck will continue since my birthday in the 22nd and bear season starts the day after. Maybe I'll get my first bear.

Hope you all enjoy the photos.

Heck, I kind of think I'm crazy for believing this. But, here's my story from this weekend. Dad and I went up to camp Thursday night to hunt. Our camp is back in the mountain in Rothrock State Forest between Milroy and State College, in Mifflin County. It is about 6 miles from blacktop road (and civilization) to the camp. Thursday night, around 7:30 or so, as we were about halfway back the dirt road (that'd be 2-3 miles from civilization), we saw something in the road ahead of us. The instant the headlights caught it, it darted into the shadows. As we drove by it, my dad slowed down and I caught a glimpse of it when the tail lights hit it - it was something orange-ish in color. I immediately blurted out "a fox?", asking because I wasn't sure if foxes were common up there. Dad said it could be and put the car in reverse.

As we backed up, the tail lights caught it again, "No, that looks like a cat!" I said. Dad immediately barked back "Bobcat?" Neither one of us knew what a bobcat looked like, but this seemed to be about the right size - I'd guess 2-3 times the size of a large house cat. As it turned, dad pointed out "That's not a bobcat, the tail is too long". We were able to watch it for maybe 30 seconds or a minute. It seemed like we sat there for a while, but I'm sure it wasn't really that long.

Dad had handed me a flashlight, which I was holding on it through my window during this time. It peered back at us from around a tree, and then scurried off into the darkness. Later, I wished I'd have thought to pull my cell phone and snap a photo or two, but the thought never occurred to me.

It was definitely feline, about the size of a bobcat, but it had a long tail. It was big, but not flabby like a large house cat - when it moved, it was big but slender and lean. Its belly didn't hang low or jiggle like big house cats do. And it just seemed to big to be a house cat.

The only thing I can think that it could have been would be a mountain lion. I know that PGC holds fast to their assertion that PA Mtn Lions are non-existent, but what else could it have been? Anyone else out there have any thoughts about what I might've seen? Any other cats that could get that big in PA?

Looking for a good source and recommendations for the basics. I'm going for deer in SE PA for the first time this year. I'd like to get some appropriate gear for the conditions and would like to only have to do it once. Looking for feedback on where to get camo stuff and what to get.

I currently have a camouflage button down shirt and denim pants. I have layers of spandex or cotton underwear for layering. So it is mostly the outerwear that I need.

Water resistance would be nice. My hands/feet tend to get very cold, too. I have 2XL glove size hands. I've looked at Dick's Sporting Goods, but they didn't really impress me with their selection. How is Cabela's? Others?

Thanks!

Then came 2 bucks....panting and foaming (I know the feeling) They all ran out of sight but came back around the house about a minute later. They totally ignored me. The larger buck kept trying to mount the doe but I think she was holding out for a ring....or at least dinner. My point is this: Isn't it very early for the rut?

Hang-on fixed position tree stands used for hunting, made in China and imported by Gander Mountain Co. of St. Paul, Minn, are being recalled.

The tree stands were sold at Gander Mountain stores between July 2008 and July 2009.

HOW MANY: About 13,000.

WHY: The clasp can open unexpectedly if the strap is not fastened correctly. This would cause the tree stand to fall. The company has received two reports of people falling, including reports of a broken pelvis and arm for one user.

ADDITONAL INFO: By phone at 888-542-6337; by Web at www.gandermountain.com or www.cpsc.gov.

Just want to make sure all our hunters are safe. If you have one of these stop using it and return it.
