Hi all.

OK let me start this off by saying that I'm a new shooter. On top of that, I'm from the UK originally so this is all new to me!

With that out of the way, I'm looking for a rifle range. I have been to Classic Pistol and although I enjoy it there, it can get a bit claustrophobic there and my wife (also a new shooter) doesn't enjoy it there more than me because of this.

Ideally, I'm looking for a range that can offer me practical carbine and pistol courses as well as a fun and safe range to plink at. Due to the claustrophobic issues, an outdoor range would probably be better for my wife and I.

I've seen Langhorne Rod and Gun Club and really liked the look of it. I like the idea of the carbine and pistol courses they run there.

However, it seems a little overwhelming what with the meeting's on specific days, and if someone could explain what "Required work hours per year 8 hours" means, that would be great.

I've also seen the Branch Valley range and the Conestoga Gun Club.

Basically, I hope that there's some of you out there that can offer me some help.

I look forward to your replies.

Thanks

BTW - if you don't think that is the range near French Creek, think again. The same guy is in another video shooting a shotgun at the 50 yard range and the guy taking the vid pans downrange. Its definitely at FC.

My wife and I went down to Classic Pistol today on the advice of Steve_NEPhila and we weren't disappointed. The place had a good selection of hand guns and rifles and the staff was very friendly. They set my wife and I up very quickly with some ammo for her Ruger SR9 and a rental LCR.

We shot for about an hour and then went to return the LCR. The owner Bob asked us how the LCR was and I said we hated it. I could only get 5 rounds off before my hand hurt and wife would only shoot 2 at a time for the same reason (we were shooting 38 +p, but that's all they had). I said we were looking for a conceal carry type gun but wont be getting a small revolver. He said he had a 442 and he shot about 10 rounds through it per firing session and said that's all you need to do to be good with it to be a good shot at 7 yards. He also mentioned how it could dissapear easily into your pocket. I told him we would never want to shoot the thing and were now looking for some kind of compact 9mm instead. He quickly suggested a Walther PPS and said if my wife and I wanted too, there was another couple firing one at the moment and we could squeeze a few rounds off as he knew them. Awesome!

I squeezed off several rounds at 7 yards and got a 2 inch grouping. My wife liked it but tends to have problems with semis due to limp wristing so we are going to try the SP101 next time for her. For me though, the gun is awesome and I'll be buying one when I can!

Classic Pistol is great place where the staff are friendly and the owner went above and beyond. My wife and I will definetly be going back there to shoot again!

Thanks Steve, I owe you some rep!

When I came to these forums a few days ago I was worried about finding a decent range where I can shoot my Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. It has a 25 round clip and the gaming ranges won't allow more than 3 rounds to be loaded into the magazine at once.

Anyway I investigated Sunset Hill Shoot Range yesterday afternoon. When we got there we had to do some paperwork and read their disclaimer. They even took our driver license numbers. Afterwards we got our rifle and took instruction from one of the guys on the range. I think for $35/person it was a bit much. All they did was read through a list of rules and asked us to demonstrate the operation of our weapon: Loading the clip, putting a round or two down range, extracting a round from the chamber, removing the magazine from the gun, opening the extractor bolt, and laying the rifle down in the proper way. However once you passed the class it only cost $10 to access the range (On future visits), and after a year you must pay an additional $10 to renew your safety license. When we passed the class they just gave us a business card with our information filled out in the back saying we passed the class.

Afterwards we were free to fire our rifle downrange. We were on the target/plinking range. The distance was 25-30 yards. We also rented a spotting scope for $1 so we could see where our rounds were going. I was having a lot of fun until my rifle started to have failures to extract (I will elaborate on this in a different thread). Overall I was very happy with the range and will return once my rifle is fixed. The stalls from where we fired from were all covered so you could fire your weapon without the elements getting in the way. They also had trap shooting, which some people were doing while we were shooting. I believe it was $25 for 25 shots, don't quote me on that.

They also had target stalls with human silhouettes, they are connected to a retractable line so you could pull them in. To rent one of these stalls they're $5/hour, which is reasonable IMO. Finally they have their own weapons for rent which you can fire: M16's, AK-47's, M1 Garand's, Desert Eagles, Shotguns, and Sniper Rifles. If it wasn't so late in the day I might have rented out a Desert Eagle which was $8 for a 5 rounds of .44 magnums. No full auto's however. So if you're in the area looking for a place to fire nearly any of your guns without pesky state range rules this is the place for you. This place will now become my choice shooting range for now on.

Prices:

$35/person- One time safety class. (On the first visit it's only $35/person, you don't pay an additional $10 to access the range on the first visit.)

$10/person?- To access the range on future visits.

$10/person/year- To renew your safety license.

$1/day- To rent a spotting scope.

$5/hour- To use the shooting stalls with the retractable human silhouettes.

Hello my name is Chris. This past Saturday I bought myself my first rifle, an S&W MP 15-22...

Hello my name is Chris. This past Saturday I bought myself my first rifle, an S&W MP 15-22. I was looking forward to this Friday when I would have a chance to finally fire this rifle. Now today I might have learned of a rule that might totally ruin any enjoyment I can have from this hobby. I was told by a friend of my fathers that you can only have a certain amount of rounds in a magazine at a time.

Since I was working today my father called on my behalf and told me public ranges in this state only allow you to have 3 rounds loaded in the rifle at a time. Right now I am very worried that this is true. I am hoping he just misunderstood the person because I was talking to someone on the S&W forums and he tells me in his state they only allow you to fire 2 burst at a time but you can have as much ammo in the rifle as it can hold. I am thinking this is what the person told my father and since he doesn't know anything about firearms he had a misunderstanding.

So is this true, can I only have 3 rounds loaded at a time when operating rifles on a Pennsylvania range? If so how can I get around this? I can't fire this rifle on my property since I live in an enclosed community and they will not allow it. I am thinking about going to a private range but I am worried they will force me to pay a monthly fee for the use of their range. Or the fee to get on the range will be ridiculous. Either way if anyone can recommend some private ranges I would be grateful.

So please help me out, thank you.
