I'm not a local but I go very often. Well as often as I can seeming that it's a 7 hour ride from here.
Here are my tips: -Use the lightest clear mono line possible (4lb is better 6lb will work) -Use the longest lightest rod you have (I use a 9'6" ultralight noodle rod) -Use a reel with a smooth drag ( I use a Penn 430SSg) -Use the smallest split shot if any and small hooks (BB split shot & #12-14 hook) -Best bait would definately be emerald shiners but single eggs and skein work -I like to use flies on spinning gearr too (sucker spawn, eggs, crystal meth) ("Yes there are flies called crystal meth") -Wear felt bottom wading boots b/c the bottoms are solid stone and very slippery from the summer growth of algae. You can find more info about techniques, where to go, maps, and reports if you follow this link. http://www.fishusa.com/fisherie/

also not a local but i go out when i can as im only an hour away. so just to add a little ... they make line called tippet that is thinner than normal monofilament for a given strength, good idea to put this for the end 3-4 feet on your pole as the steelies tend to spook easy when they see the line, sinkers, hook etc... in the water. you can find tippet at some walmarts that have fly fishing gear. as far as bait goes it all depends on water conditions, but yea emerald shiners, single eggs, egg sacks, i second the recommendatuon of the fishusa site. lots of info there.

Steelheading is like anything else. You could spend about fifteen million dollars on equipment if you wanted to. You could read books, tie your own flies, wait for perfect conditions, read the "reports" about what and where the fish are hot. If you do those things, you will surely have great success. IF you decide not to be a diehard, you could always go to the wall at Walnut Creek wearing a pair of sneakers, bomb out a chunk of Power Bait under a glow in the dark bobber on the end of a bass fishing rod and STILL have a pretty damn good chance of hooking up with some steel. These are two extremes, but I hope it makes a point.

If you see the guy with the monkey on his back come say Hi. It's me. I can usually be found swinging a fly somewhere on elk once a week or so. (Dont mind the UL rod there it was from a long hike up a native stream a while ago)
