Erie County CCW Application Form

Hi Everyone:

I am disabled and use a motorized wheelchair to get around. I would like to get a revolver for Conceal Carry and Home Defense once I get my CCW permit upon relocating to Erie County.

My upper body strength is good. I am right handed; my dexterity is fair but better in my right hand then my left hand. I do not stand much, so my legs are weak. In most cases, a manual wheelchair is used when traveling with someone else pushing the wheelchair.

Another thing is, I am unemployed. Are these two things that could be held against me, even though it should not be by the Erie County Sheriff when I submit my Erie County CCW Application Form? Also I am currently unemployed at this time. If I leave the Employment Section of the Application blank, will that be frowned upon?

One more thing, I was just wondering how the Ruger SP101 (catalog number KSP-3231X in .32 Magnum/.32 Long with 3 1/16" barrel would rate as a Concealed Carry Handgun for a disabled shooter such as myself? Would this handgun have enough stopping power

To answer your question on the unemployment part...it has no bearing on approval of an LTCF, nor does being H/C. Our Sheriff is a great guy and so is the Deputy who takes the applications, they won't give you a hard time if there is no reason to. However if memory serves me correctly I think you need to be a resident of PA for a period of time...I could be wrong...if I am I gurantee someone will weigh in on that.
The Ruger SP101 is a fine sidearm but I would get the .357 flavor...that's what I have and love it.

im kinda new here so you all will have to forgive me. i went and bought a handgun yesterday and went down to pay Mr. Merski a visit and fill out my application for my permit. anyways i wanted to know if their realy strict here? do you need a "spotless" record? i have a couple dents in mine but nothing serious or that says im a murderer. any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends exactly what those "DENTS" are.

haha. nothing too bad i think. my sons mother filed a false PFA against me in an attempt to keep my son away from me. she had me arested a couple of times and i had to hire a P.I. to prove otherwise so she dropped both of the contempts and dropped the pfa after the second time. this all happened around 10 years age.

Yankee boy living in Toronto with permits from several states; anyone forsee any problems if I take a drive down to Erie and apply for a non-resident CCW permit? Have family and friends throughout the USA and again, am an American living in Toronto with a US passport. Don't really need a PA permit as my others are good in PA but would like to have one "just because". Planning on visiting the Shriners Hospital in Erie as I am a Shriner and have never been.

I'm in the same situation.

When I go to my other residence in South Carolina, I avoid the Niagara crossings. It's a crap shoot.

Some border control guys there have a vendetta against gun owners, in my opinion.

Sometimes, when I hand a primary guy my US Passport and declare my firearms, I go right through.

Sometimes though, I get a secondary, and I'm told that I can turn around with my gun, or get arrested. They don't want to hear about the Title 18 USC travel exemption. NYS does not consider the law an exemption. It's a defense.

Then, when you go through without your firearm, to shop in Buffalo, for example, you're flagged. When my wife wanted to shop in The U.S., I told her fine, but she might get a takedown at the booth. She said, "Fine". Great woman!

So, instead, I drive to Windsor-Detroit and then south.

We live in Toronto area and cross over the border and Fort Erie several times a year heading to PA and points south (if we are heading to NJ we leave our guns with my cousin in her safe).

To be honest, in 50 or more crossings, I have handed border guys my US passport and a couple of my CCW permits as soon as I pull up to the booth. They generally ask where the guns are stowed and we have TWO minisafes in the SUV so I tell them the unloaded guns are in one safe and the ammo is in the other safe. The most arduous gruelling that I have had to date is a discussion of Glocks versus Sigs, etc.

I always carry ALL firearm documentation in a wee binder on board (I actually have TWO of them in case one is confiscated); the most important documents for travelling through NY State are (a) a copy of the regulations on interstate transport; (b) a copy of the BATFE FAQ on firearms being imported and transported; and (c) a very rare letter from one of the NY State Trooper barrack commaners stating that if anyone has any questions regarding the federal law XXXX he can be contacted at XXXX barracks with his phone number. We have several non-res permits (and this is exactly why 'the more the merrier' attitude on permits) and have copies of each in the binder and carry each in my wallet when travelling stateside.

We are going to be buying a piece of retirement property in FL this year and will register to vote, etc., in FL and obtain a resident permit at the same time. In the meantime we may us our cousin's address in PA or NJ as our residential address while stateside as that is generally where we stay when stateside. A PA resident permit would resolve come issues I think.

In the meantime, we await the other boot to fall.

It should not be this way and hopefull HR822 if it ever passes and gets signed instead of vetoed will make life easier.

That's exactly what I do, except for handing over the CCW permits.

Two summers ago, I had a secondary with a guy who just sneered at my permits. He sneered at the interstate transport regulation. He said that state law always trumps federal law. I showed him my documentation from the NYSP. He disregarded it. He told me that he had been in law enforcement for ten years and there was nothing I could teach him. He told me to sit down and he would have me arrested by Buffalo PD.

I asked if I could speak with his supervisor. He denied the request. I guess no one on the NYS side felt like arresting me that day, or he was bluffing. He escorted me to my vehicle and I had a lights and siren escort back to the Canadian side.

When I returned to the border without firearms, I was given a take-down at the booth and my car was completely searched. The same guy as before handed me an empty mag and sneered again. I had left it in my glove box.

He must have put something on my screen, because I've had problems on and off since then.

Last summer I had a meeting with a supervisor at Rainbow who assured that the officer was wrong trying to arrest me. He told me that it would not happen again.

At Peace Bridge, last month, it happened again. I was told, basically, shut up, turn around, or we will have you arrested.

No trouble at Windsor-Detroit. I notice one fellow typing quite a bit on what I am guessing was my screen--and he took the trouble to print out Michigan non-resident transport regs for me. Basically, the Michigan border folk rolled their eyes at the NYS border folk.

I will try handing over a couple of CCW permits with my passport to see if that helps.

I would get in touch with Niagara Homeland Security in Buffalo to plead my case, but you know about cans of worms.
