Is this "police check" card legal? Shouldn't the sheriff be conducting his investigation without the assistance of the applicant? Shouldn't the sheriff be calling the applicants local PD himself if he needs to speak with them regarding applicants? What needs to be done to prevent this from continuing?

Don't listen to your chief LEO. I wouldn't get worried until you get a denial letter. Then there is a form you can fill out to still try to get your permit. At least that's what my local sherriff's dept told me. Hang in there. Your children are not a reason that you would be denied any more than any other parent.

Montco likes to make up their own rules...

I followed the Montco guidelines... in all honesty it wasn't that much of a hassle. Clearly they are making the process harder than it's supposed to be, however, I was able to get my LTCF within 24 hours. I don't have the legal funds to make a complaint which will be heard.
Submitted paperwork to local PD, signed by next day and went down to Norristown to get the License. I had only been living in Royersford for a few months and no problems at all. T |

i live in MontCo. and had to have my local PD sign off on the check card.
My wife has know the cops personally for the last 12 years though. And the issuing sherriff is a former Police Cheif from my Borough. I had no problem at all. Plus, I had a problem 2 years ago (in Philly) when I had to pull my weapon. Long story short, my LTCF had expired by 8 months (totally my fault for not checking) and they arrested me, and confiscated my weapon. Case was dismissed though. I told my local PD this and still had no affect on getting my permit. |

No. You didn't "have to". Most just do because is less time-consuming and costly than holding the Sheriff to the process mandated by law. I'm not criticizing you for your decision, but I do want to make sure you understand the facts of the situation.

My LTCF is from MontoCo. The one good thing about the police check card thing is that you can get your LTCF in 1-2 weeks, not like DelCo or similar.
