Question Wife had an interesting question.

My wife asked an interesting question today and I did not have a good answer to.

Our neighbors are social workers for the state. My wife is worried that if they see me carrying(OC/CC) that they can report us as bad parents and have the kids taken away because I carry a firearm. I am pretty sure that legal carrying is not enough to be investigated by the state but I am not 100% about it. Both of us have our LTCF.

I have never heard of this but I am wondering if any of you have run into something like this?

Any insight would be great so I can let her know.

Thanks

I'm sure they can try...

But seeing how ownership and carrying is a protected right in PA, and the fact that 1 of every 23 people in the state have a license to carry, and the ratio of people how own guns but dont carry is far greater - whomever they try to report you to will probably laugh in their faces.

Now if you were waving your guns around at your kids or in some other hazardous manner, sure - they could probably have your kids taken away.

You are optimistic.

Bottom line, it's legal. If they want to claim that it makes for an unsafe environment I'm sure they could push it and make your life rough. It really depends on who is above them and how badly they want to peruse it. If there is a line of anti-gun people in that organization them might have you jump through hoops for a while. I don't think by any means it would be enough to take your kids however that does not mean they can't suck you into a rough spiral.

If it was me, I would carry as normal but be aware that it could be an issue to those people.

My thoughts exactly. I should add that if they ever try and speak with you or your kids in a professional capacity, make sure you/kids flatly refuse.

agree with JS, but wish to also add:

often our preconcieved notions about people are wrong. For a long time my wife was worried that if the neighbors saw me taking rifle cases in and out of the house our son would be able to play with their kids, we would be snarled at, ect.
"you know their all liberals around here"
stuff like that.
Well, the truth is that when the neighbors did see me unloading the trunk one day it took me half an hour to get in the house because they where so excited to find out where to shoot.
When the other neighbors dad saw me OC, he regaled me on and on and on about shooting trap in his younger days and how you could go buy a gun at K-mart.

The fact is people think there is a social stigma attached to gun ownership, and we label and sterotype people based upon the very most shallow of criteria.

My neighbor with 2 Prius's thinks seeing me OC is a non issue, he just wants to stand around and talk about his dog.

I spoke recently with a guy that works for the county government (omgomg) in the legal dept of all places (OMGOMGOMG) about changing poorly posted never updated rule relating to firearms. The converstation ended some 40 minutes later with him wanting to come shoot CMP.

Come out of the closet

Its OK

and if anyone tries anything illegal or immoral against you due to your gun ownership......... we got your back.

As we all know, anti-gun zealots can be be quite unreasonable and ridiculous. I would keep it concealed and not take the risk. They could make your life hell.

Who cares what they think. The Sheriff already deemed that you "are of good character" by the issuance of your LTCF.

To the OP , just another reason to keep the handy micro recorder you surely purchased for OCing run ins with the Cops , handy and active in case your neighbors try to stir some shit .

Good point, we too often go on defensive about firearms ownership, perhaps because we always hear the horror stories posted here. The upside is you might have two new shooting buddies.
