I'd like to know what % that is of the total student body of each high school, & if the numbers are increasing or if it is a steady percentage each year.
When I was in YHS, there were 352 students in my class. Multiply that by 4 & you get 1408 (but that doesn't include factoring in the extra freshmen that will transfer to Vo Tech for their last three years.) If 1411 students drop out over 10 years that means there is an avg of 141 students per year, or (using the 1408 number as total students) 9.98% of the school's student body from that school each year. When I went to orientation at Penn State, they said that 33% of us would drop out. I remember thinking, "That's an encouraging thing to tell us at orientation! Way to be a positive motivational influence!" I'd like to see the numbers presented that way for each high school. The schools with the lower numbers could actually have higher percentages of students dropping out. Numbers can be misleading... I had a friend who transferred to a private high school after our freshman year. He graduated validictorian & brags about that to this day, but what he doesn't tell anyone is that there were just three people in his graduating class! I'll bet the person who was last in his class tells people they graduated 3rd in their class... also leaving out the fact that there were just the three of them. ![]() I don't know what it's like now, but YHS had the best opportunities for learning in the county when I was there. They had a full planetarium that other school's students would visit on field trips, a greenhouse, the best equiped science dept in the county, receiving surplus equipment from York Hospital and other outlets that the other schools didn't have. Several teachers had doctorates, many of the teachers were also teaching college courses part time at York College, etc etc. Students who were more inclined to excel in sports also had ample opportunities. As far as the phys-ed dept was concerned, there was an olympic sized pool & diving tank, a main gym & two aux gyms, plus a weight room, wrestling room, and indoor track. Outside, we had a football field, baseball diamond & outdoor track & field setup. For the vocational students, there was a huge wood shop, two large metal shops, a print shop with a full sized three color (at the time, state of the art) printing press, two darkrooms, a drafting room, a plastics shop, and a shop for small engine repair. There was an entire wing for performing arts with their own small stage in addition to the main auditorium. There were students who transferred in to the city just to be in our performing arts program. We had by far the largest & best sounding marching band in the county Etc etc etc No matter what you were into, YHS had the opportunity there for you to excel & prosper. I really don't know what happened in the last 20+ years since I was a student there, but it seems to me that either the current crop of students aren't seizing the opportunities presented to them or the teachers don't care... or both.

True, about the only thing I remeber from that statistics class I had to take was that if yuo tried hard enough, you can make them support nearly any point of view you want to convey. It all depends on what you show and what you don't...
Sounds like YHS had one heck of a physical school back then. I wonder what it looks like now... Then again, I might not want to know. |

WELL, 87th let's see...
AMGibson and I were taking home the intoxicated people on Halloween night. This guy was right the corner of Market and Queen. He was standing out on the egde of the curb but we had to drive around the block to get the picture and he had stepped back. We asked permission for the photo and he covered his face...but didn't stop what he was doing lol

I don't know about home invasion rings, but I do know quite a few people who walked in the front door of the police department looking perfectly healthy and walked or were gurneyed out the back after having mysteriously used their faces to beat up on some officers black jack. I don't think that they are as bad as they once were, but I would never stop my car when being pulled over unless we were in a well lit area. They were not all bad, it is just that the one or two or five that were made all of the rest look bad and whenever you complained you ran into the blue brotherhood issue. I was never personally assaulted, but I did witness a few who were. Then again I turn into a perfect gentleman when someone is in my face with a gun.
