Depends on the layout, usually you have 2 choices.
1 suck it up, and walk up to the gate carrying.
2 drive by the gate on your way to parking, if you can, usually a lot of pedestrian traffic you have to deal with this way. You might get a better look at security before walking up.

That's the thing, there is no gate. It's wide open.

They definitely do pat-downs.
It might depend on what concert .... but all the ones ive been to they give a quick pat down. I think its law they have to.

Ive gone there for about a decade now for various events.
Jam on the river
Primus
Widespread Panic
Disco Biscuits

All had pat downs. Making sure youre not sneaking in camera equipment.
However , since its public grounds of Philadelphia , the security detail inside is usually Philadelphia Police. VERY safe atmosphere.

Hope it helped.

I'm not all that concerned about being armed AT the concert. It's the thought of not being armed for the walk back to the car after the show is over that bothers me, as does leaving my gun in my car in Philly. Is there a secured parking lot/garage near there? I would be ok locking the gun in the car if that's the case, but not parked on the street.

'Secured parking garage' is an oxymoron; don't trust valets either.
You should probably be ok at penns landing.

Really? I was down there twice last year and didn't deal with any kind of security whatsoever.
I'd have given my left nut to see Primus down there, when did they play?

There will be places to park along penns landing and a pretty well maintained parking for the concert. Might cost you 10-15$ though. However if you park in the south street vicinity you can park around south street , hop on south street and walk down to the festival pier bridge at the end of south.

However if its a Friday/Saturday night your best bet is paying for parking within walking distance from the concert. Because finding a parking spot on one of these nights will take you an hour (literally).

Here is some more info on parking for you , specifically from the festival pier website , the map on the left side of the page will show you how theres a scattering of parking lots all within walking distance (please notice the civilian bridge at south street which is what i was referencing) :

To be honest the "walk back to the car" should be fine ... its a beautiful city and penns landing -> south street walk is one of the best/safest parts of the city. If you pay for parking along the water front you will have to walk no more than a few hundred yards to your parking lot. If you poke around on that website I provided you will see there is nothing at the festival pier but family oriented restaurants. There is NO riff raff hanging around and plenty of police after the events hanging around the venue.

6/16/2004: Primus at Festival Pier, Philadelphia

ok its been a while. I think last time I was there was 7/07 for Panic. Last year the concerts slowed down because of renovation. They havent booked anything solid there in a while.
