2 for my M1911, 1 for everything else.

I carry two extra mags, ten apiece for a total of 30 Rounds of .45.

When I carry my G23, I have one spare mag, usually a G22 mag. So 15 rounds plus 13 rounds loaded.
When i carry my snubbie, I have one speedloader, so 5 rounds plus 5 rounds loaded. |

1 spare on the hip, one car's center console and 2 in my gear in the trunk...all loaded with 17 rounds.
Some days I go light and skip the extra mag on the hip though.

12+1 in the gun, 2 spares of 12.
If thirty seven rounds of .357SIG can't do it, I probably should have grabbed a rifle. |

Depends on what I'm carrying.
If I'm carrying my Walther PPS as my primary gun, I will always carry at least one spare 6-round mag (in addition to the 6 or 7 rounds in the gun itself). If it's a backup, I may not carry any spare mags for it. If I'm carrying my G22 or G27, I will always carry at least one spare 15-round mag (in addition to the 10 or 16 already in the gun). If I carry both, I'll usually carry three spare mags as they all work in both guns. If I'm carrying my S&W M36 as a primary gun, I try to carry at least one speedloader, if not two, but it's not as essential for me because I don't have to worry about mag failures. But from a round-count standpoint, I like to have at least 5 extra rounds in addition to the 5 in the gun. If it's a BUG, I may or may not carry extra ammo for it. I generally don't carry extra ammo in the car or truck when I'm around town, as I'm confident that if the SHTF, I can shoot my way back to my house with the ammo I carry on my person. However, if I go outside the Valley, I tend to bring extra ammo directly proportional to the distance I'm traveling. That can be up to 10 extra mags and 2 speedloaders, plus a few boxes of spare ammo and a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 that gives me a bit more range and power with the same mags I carry in my Glocks. Or I might just skip the extra pistol ammo, and just throw my underfolder AK in the vehicle with a few 30-round mags in a separate container. Or the Mossberg 500 with barrel removed (for space constraints) plus a few boxes of slugs and buckshot. Or the Saiga-12 with a few 10-round mags. Or... well... I'm sure you get the idea. Sure, it might seem excessive, but I'd rather be prepared. Sure, you might not think you need more than 5 rounds in one encounter... but what if you have multiple encounters? What if, after shooting some homie who tried to carjack you, his buddies come around looking for you? What if the SHTF and you may need to operate outside peacetime laws in order to get home to your loved ones? Do you really think that one mag is sufficient to accomplish that goal? I take the approach that you can never have too much ammo (except for that whole issue with tearing space-time), and that it is necessary to carry at least one spare mag with a semi-auto handgun. Aside from that, I'm fairly flexible... I picked "2" as an average...

I always carry one spare mag for a semi auto, doesn't matter what the capacity is.
When I carry my J frame, I'll always have a speed strip with 5 extra rounds in it. Sometimes, I'll add a speed loader in a jacket pocket, if I'm wearing a coat/jacket.

Depends on the day ...
Most of the time with the 4" 1911 it's 1 spare unless I'm going to an area that I'm not comfortable with then it's 2 or 3 spares (all Chip McCormick 7 rounders). If I'm traveling light it could be just the snubbie with nothing else or just a speed strip.

I voted for 2. I carry 17 rounds of 9mm in my XD so I'm pretty confident I can atleast get back to my car for the other 2 mags if SHTF. Followed by then being able to get back to the house for the rifles.
I'd like to be able to carry an extra mag at all times but it's really damned annoying. I usually don't carry the second two mags on my person unless I'm going out of the area or heading to places like Allentown or Philadelphia, otherwise the spare mags stay in the car. A big dilemma for me is I only have the double mag carrier that came with my XD. It's bulky and not built for concealment whatsoever. I generally OC everywhere I go but I don't like having my extra magazines on display for personal reasons.
