Forget about the extended gunfight argument.

It doesn't matter how reliable your firearm is, ammo can be manufactured out of spec for case dimensions and in most cases it will result in a malf.

Magazine lips spread over time.

Mag bodies fatigue.

Floor plates fail and pop off.

Not carrying an extra magazine is ill advised.

Well put, Tony.

I just had another guy tell me that all he carries is 17 rounds, because if he had to use more than that, he would be dead.

It's all just a mindset thing. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Fight until there's no fight left, if your gun runs out of ammo, beat the guy with it. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

I bought a shoulder holster with double mag pouches on it. What the heck the gun only comes with a spare mag (that makes 2 mag total). If I wear this holster, I would need a total of 3 mags, so I bought a spare mag for the purpose. I just want everything to look good and in place, ya know.....he he he

Yes.

Feed lips, mag bodies and floor plates.

Out of spec ammo can also render a magazine inoperable.

I like my Uncle Mike's ambidextrous holster. I carry it IWB and it has a spare mag holder built into it, on the side that doesn't affect how bulky it is to carry IWB. I usually carry a Bersa .380 and with only 7 in the clip and one in the chamber it's nice to have another 7 . Before reading through this I hadn't really thought of it as a backup for mechanical failure, but that's an excellent point.
