Man tries to take loaded gun to hearing
Man arrested outside judge’s office, arraigned on new charges
By Sara Ganim
- sganim@centredaily.com

A 22-year-old man was arrested outside a district judge';s office Tuesday after police say he tried to take a loaded gun to his hearing before Judge Jonathan Grine.

Hobson Lyle McKown, of 592 Pierson Drive, Ferguson Township, was due in court to face summary charges of harassment, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct at 4 p.m. Tuesday, but in the hours leading up to the hearing, his strange behavior led court staff to think he was armed, according to court documents.

When he arrived with his attorney, McKown was confronted by a police officer who found a loaded .308 caliber handgun with seven rounds, one in the chamber, according to court documents.

Police said McKown called the district judge's office on South Pugh Street around 1 p.m. that day asking if there was a locked box for him to store his gun when he arrived for his hearing. A court clerk told McKown that weapons aren't allowed inside the office.

About an hour later, a man who was later identified as McKown entered the office and quickly ran out, police wrote in a criminal complaint.

Then 10 minutes later, he came back and searched the court’s calendar for the day, police wrote.

Staff became uneasy when McKown began taking pictures of the facility and of signs stating weapons are prohibited, the complaint said.

McKown was arraigned Tuesday night before District Judge Carmine

Prestia on a new list of charges, including possession of a firearm in a court facility, and other weapons violations.

Sheriff Denny Nau said McKown's concealed weapon's permit had previously been revoked by the Sheriff's Office.

McKown was taken to Centre County jail on $10,000 cash bail.

Man arrested for bringing gun to court

By Elizabeth Murphy Email
Collegian Staff Writer

A man was arrested for bringing a firearm into district court Tuesday during a hearing, according to court documents.

A Kel-Tec .380 caliber gun was removed from Hobson L. McKown, of 592 Pierson Drive, after he arrived for a 4 p.m. hearing at Centre County District Judge Jonathan Grine's court.

When reached Wednesday night, McKown said he would not comment as to why he brought his gun to court on Tuesday.

McKown has been charged with possession of firearms or other dangerous weapon in a court facility, a third-degree misdemeanor, according to court documents.

There were seven rounds in the gun and one round in the chamber, according to court documents.

Court staff member Jennifer Carson reported she fielded a call around 1 p.m. from a man asking if a lock box was available for firearms brought to the court.

Carson said weapons are not permitted in the building, advising the caller to leave the firearm in the car or make other arrangements, police said.

At about 2 p.m., Carson saw a male enter the court, take a picture, and quickly leave the premises, according to the court documents.

Ten minutes passed and the same male, who was later identified as McKown, returned and asked for a copy of the court's schedule, police said.

McKown was then seen taking a series of photographs outside of the building, including signs indicating firearms are prohibited in the court facility, police said.

Judge Grine then confronted McKown, who immediately fled, according to court documents.

McKown returned at 4 p.m. for his scheduled hearing when police stopped him at the entrance of the building, police said. McKown refused to state whether he had a firearm, according to court documents.

After consulting his attorney, Timothy Fleming, McKown agreed to the policeman's request to take the gun, police said.

The police took the gun from McKown's front right pocket, according to court documents.

Centre County Sheriff Denny Nau revoked McKown's concealed weapon permit, according to court documents.

I'm not too sure they were in violation of the UFA... the prohibitions on schools, court facilities, and even "prohibited offensive weapons" are actually not found within the UFA, rather they're "inchoate crimes."

Title 18 Pa.C.S.A. Crimes and Offenses
