Mine is ready before it hits the holster. If seconds count, I may not have time to chamber one.

    One in the pipe.

In a CQC or FOF encounter, you don't have time to chamber a round.

If the firearm isn't ready to go "bang" then it's about as useful as a rock.

On my carry piece, which is on my person from when my feet hit the ground in the morning, until my head hits the pillow at night, one in the pipe.

Regarding my guns in storage in the house, I don't keep a round in the chamber.
All of my guns have recently disappeared. An empty chambered gun is only a club.

The only reasons to not have 1 chambered, whether auto or revolver, is:

    1. if the gun is a single action revolver without a transfer bar, reset detent, or other safety feature - and even at that you can still have a fully chambered gun, just put hammer down between the chambers.

    2. the manufacturer specifically states NOT to have one chambered. Ignore the non-carry wording. They will recommend you keep gun empty, but that is for storage.

If you fear a discharge due to drops - work on your grip and get a holster with a retention device.

What are you people talking about?

My primary carry firearm has 6 chambers, my secondary has five. You put a cartridge in each chamber, swing the cylinder closed - your done.

Why would you leave a chamber empty? Are you looking to play reverse Russian Roulette???

Locked, cocked and ready to rock.

Eight in the magazine, one in the pipe, safety on.
