Default Ladies Packing Heat: Guns No Longer a Man's World

The firearm industry is a man's world no longer. With gun sales slowing, gun makers are increasingly turning their focus to women, who are buying in in a big way.

"In the last decade we've seen a huge increase in women purchasing firearms. In fact, they're the fastest growing segment of firearms owners in the country," Catherine Mortensen, a spokesperson for the National Rifle Association, said.

The rise of firearm sales is largely tied to self-defense, with women increasingly wanting to be able to protect not only themselves, but their families.

Not surprising. I took my 78 year old mother to a NRA training class last weekend and she was one of 17 women in the class out of 20. In addition to mostly being women in the class I bet the average age was in the late 40's to mid 50's.

    I say great!

I for one suspect that once we can get them away from ineffective calibers (.380), think there are going to be a lot more dead crooks.

Women are better shots then men, on average. IMO.

I really like to see woman taking charge of their safety. I'm mean beyond peeing on their attackers.

Anyone else have a wife that's apprehensive (or was at one point) of carrying?

My lady knows her way around all of our firearms, loves going to the range, and is proficient in handling and marksmanship, but she's nervous about carrying.

Apprehensive as "she does not feel like carrying" (discomfort) or flat out is afraid? My wife would never carry, but it was more that she was concerned you could see her gun/uncomfortable and she made all kinds of excuses. Got her to try a belly band, I reminded her daily how when we lived in NJ it was illegal and eventually started carrying. Also, I would send article after article on women who saved their lives and that of her children... I believe that woke her up the most. It wasn't until I told her Obama hates you carrying that she decided to carry..

Quite honestly, I believe my wife feels that since she is with me most of the time, why should she carry? I still have to remind her, especially when she is headed into "concerning" areas, but it took her almost a full year before she would carry and she refuses to chamber...same with my daughter. It's a work in progress.

It sounds like she is a little bit fearful of the responsibility, and that's something that can't be forced, but rather must be accepted willingly.

It almost seems like she's afraid of acknowledging the threats that are out there. I remind her occasionally, but there's a fine line between bombarding with bad news and her totally shutting down, and making her aware enough for the need of a defensive weapon.

Also, you hit the nail on the head with her feeling that because I always carry she's safe. That's one of the first protests I get. If we're always together fine, but that's unrealistic.

    Personally I'm all for it.

Imagine women who need their gun to match the rest of their outfit. Guns are the new purse.

Imagine how many guns they well have......

This comes out as a "new" story every couple of years, since the 1960's at least.

Women have owned and used guns since before Molly Pitcher. From time to time, someone notices and thinks it's a phenomenal new event.

Reminds me of the TIME magazine story, "Why Are Men And Women Different?"
