Hi Greg,

I just wanted to thank you for stopping in on Monday and bringing those things to my attention. I greatly appreciate your concerns and your help. Feel free to stop by and say hello any time.

Sheriff Anthony,

Thank you for your willingness to take time out of your schedule to see me. I know that LTCF issues are only a small part of your very busy schedule, and I'll make it a point to not bother you incessantly. However, it's nice to know that you're willing to interact with your constituents and have an open mind towards what they have to say.

If there is anything that I can personally do to assist with any changes you may wish to implement, please let me know.

Respectfully,
Greg Rotz

Time for an update. Thanks to jfrommbg for pointing out that the Franklin County Sheriff's Office now has their LTCF applications online. Also, by taking a look at these documents, it's nice to see that the Sheriff has implemented some of my previous suggestions:
  • LTCF applications for Franklin County should be made available online
Done.
  • Instructions/cover sheet provided with LTCF applications should be revised
They have been retyped so as to be neat and legible, but still contain a request to "explain" if choosing Self Defense. I hope to have time very soon to make contact again with the Sheriff and discuss this. Compare old to new.
  • SSN is not mandatory on LTCF applications
Sheriff's office has new application posted on line, which indicates SSNs are optional. Compare old to new.
  • Factual information should be provided to those who receive a LTCF
Not sure if this is being done or not. I assume it may be, since Sheriff Anthony e-mailed me shortly after our meeting to inquire about where he could get more of the flyers like the one I left with him.

There were also two other issues which I had planned to address with Sheriff Anthony at some point, but I see he has taken action on his own. I will be sure to mention this to him when I contact him.
  • "Application fee" charged
One of the big reasons I didn't push this is that I was having a hard time pinning down what specific fees are permitted by statute, and which the Sheriff may have some discretion over. The "application fee" is now a 'deposit', which reduces the overall cost of a LTCF in Franklin County by $5 ($30 to $25). When is the last time you saw the government lower a fee?
  • No signage at the courthouse, as required by §913(d)
Done. On the day of my meeting, I noticed a sign sitting in his office, but couldn't get a good look at it. My biggest concern was that it would display the prohibition without also indicating the mandated storage. I'm very please that I was incorrect. Sorry about the image quality. I snapped it with my wife's phone, then had to shrink it a bit.

If you'll make the appointment and have the meeting, I'll get you set up with notes and supporting documents. Send me a list of the "problems" and we'll get started.

Well done. Glad to hear things are progressing in a positive manor. I was also curious about the application fees...some are $19, Lancaster County is $25, and I've seen others with higher fees. I'm surprised it isn't a standard charge.

Good post Greg.

A huge step in bringing LEO awareness to the legality of OC. IMHO this method of "education" has a good possibility of being successful, especially combined with the flyers.

This should work all around the state.

Rep sent.
