Greg, I'd give 'ya rep, but I gotta spread the love some more... that was excellent!

Perhaps with your sheriff's approval, we can start using him and his LTCF procedures as the benchmark and example when we discuss them with other county sheriffs? It would be wonderful to be able to do similar sit-downs in other counties and be able to say "Here, look at Franklin County - this is the way things should be done"

Though one point that you might want to bring up with him in further discussions - several other counties issue LTCF's "on the spot" after a person passes PICS - you might want to suggest that they start doing that. But if they still feel the need to contact the provided references, they are, by law, given the 45 days... so I wouldn't push the issue. But it would still be nice for the benchmark community to be an on-the-spot issuer.

Again, Greg, good work!

Great job, on both party's count. You did a great job expressing your concerns to the Sheriff, and he did a great job by taking the time to meet with you and hear you out. I'm sure most LEOs don't like to have a citizen explain the law to them, especially when it comes to firearms law, but instead of having a "know-it-all" attitude about it, he heard you out and it sounds like he was receptive to the information you provided. Kudos to you both!

I don't think we need his approval to highlight him as a positive example any more than we'd need to get approval from those we wish to highlight who are not following correct procedure. While discussing these issues this morning, I pointed to both the Centre county Sheriff as an example of using the web to facilitate service and the example of proof of local tax payment being used by some Sheriff's as an additional requirement to obtain a LTCF being a problem. I didn't clear these points with the parties involved beforehand. I think I understand your point, but Sheriffs should be doing certain things because it's what is supposed to be done, not because they'll be held up as a shining example if they do.

Right now, I'm trying to stick to things that are clearly 'non-compliance' type issues, even if they seem small. My own wait was about 4 weeks, and my wife's was under two. Given that the law allows a full 45 days, I'm hesitant to push an 'on-the-spot' issue stance. I truly believe that Sheriff Anthony is a good man who intends to follow the law and that he's taken on this new role with integrity and honor.

At some point I wouldn't mind discussing how the actual process works in his office to see if it could be streamlined; but, if he can get the job done in 30%-60% less time than the law permits, I'm hard pressed to take issue with that.
