I just switched from thumb break to the Serpa. The always open ease of re-holstering is a great improvement. I think the retention factor is about even on both. After adjusting my Serpa to the proper cant for my draw, it is just as comfortable as my old holster. Hope that helps you

Serpa is nice if youre picky about cant angles, and I think has a bit better retention. I like my thumb break MPI due to the natural draw movement. Also, some guns just carry better on different platforms due to weight balance on the gun. Weight centered medium, and weight forward large autos might like the Serpa, where my handle heavy large revolver prefers leather.
One plus is you dont get the nasty green gunk on Serpas.

Carried a 1911 in a leather for years. I needed another when I bought my XD45 for carry, I bought a SERPA. I like it better. Your mileage may vary.

I use a SERPA, and I had a similar decision making process based on thumb-break vs. SERPA.
I really think that it all comes down to personal preference. Do you feel more comfortable releasing your sidearm with natural index finger placement, or with the palm/thumb placement for a thumb-break? I want to say that the common criminal will be more familiar with the concept of a thumb-break, and that the SERPA is more safe as a result, but that is really not reliable. Some 'gun-grabbers' will be more familiar with the idea of a thumb-break, and others will be more familiar with the SERPA. Since I feel that the threat of a grab is pretty much equal in regard to the two types of holsters, I have to say that you should go with what you are most comfortable using. Always be sure to train and practice techniques that will minimize the threat of a 'grab' regardless of what holster you choose to use. I assure you that your level of training will make a far greater difference in retention than any holster you choose, even if the holster you choose has no retention. Thinking about it a bit more: Since the first motion of a four point presentation* relies on having a proper firing grip on the weapon, I would think that a thumb break may interfere with that... I really don't know, as I have not trained with thumb-break style holsters. I do know that when presenting/drawing your weapon from its holster, the very first thing you want to do is hold the weapon with your natural firing grip. I cannot speak to thumb-break holsters, but I know you can immediately have a positive firing grip with a SERPA as you draw the weapon. * The Four Point Presentation:** 1. Take the same grip on the weapon that you will use to shoot. 2. Draw your firearm far enough to clear the holster and immediately orient the muzzle toward the threat 3. Bring your non-firing hand to support your firing hand in control of the weapon. 4. Bring the weapon to aim on the threat, drawing slack from the trigger. Prepare to, and/or engage the target. **This is meant to be informational, NOT instructional! |

I use a SERPA for my HK45....fantastic holster. As soon as they make one that accomodates a light I'll snatch that one up as well. For CC and OC, the SERPA provides good retention, a fast draw, and instant retention after reholstering, which is a big plus.

I also prefer a Serpa holster.
Someone mentioned abut "not being picky about the cant" ... Just FYI, the Serpa has five different cant angles you can set it to. Neutral, plus two forwards and two back.
