Pred, I agree you did the right thing. You basically took the lesser of the evils. Being you did not allow them in let them know you know your rights. But you made a rational decision to partly comply. You showed them the firearm in question, thats it. Maybe they asked to come in and see all firearms to test for suspicion? Ya know like the officer who pulls ya over and asks "any guns, knifes, missles or handgranades in the car" . You get a deer caught in the headlights look or get nervious, well thats now reasonable cause. One would have acted nervious the game of cat and mouse would be on.
Had they of come back with a search warrent they would have turned your place upside-down looking for all firearms. Uncovered all dirty socks under the bed , and playboys in the top of the closet
And then walked out saying have a nice day..

The fact of asking to come inside, well figure it as two motives. One to peek around and get a overall view of you as a person. On the other side, the less your neighbors know of your business the better. I am sure alot of folks on this forum have enough firearms to scare the hell out of a town police department. Being some folks on here actually outgun (own more guns and ammo) the PD's

Unfortunatly, WE (all others of this board) can only say what we would have done. BUT unfortunatly Alot say one thing and do another when put on the spot.

Now, on the registry bit. Maybe I watch to many tv shows on discovery etc. But does the ATF actually have one of every gun for ballistics?? So they can match a bullet to a few specific gun makes? If so could it be you own one of the makes of firearms that is identified by a balistics lab?? So they search the records as to who in the area owns a said make 9MM??

Snert.

Legal?, make sense?, productive?
I remember reading of a similar case some years ago on packing.org, but bear in mind that this is taxing the gray cells. There was a murder of a high profile person (a federal anti-gun prosecutor)and it was determined it was a specific type of barrel. There reports that the feds were contacting persons that had purchased a certain type of replacement barrel and asking to test fire the barrel. Makarov was the type of pistol.

I found a link to the story, note paragraph 3

1. Dare I ask what your charge would be, as in this case, the homeowner never asked them to leave?

2. Once you had charged the ATF Agents with a crime, how did you decide that 24 hours was the appropriate punishment? I'm pretty sure as a Law Enforcement Officer, you would need probable cause to exist that (1) a crime was committed and (2) that the person you are arresting likely committed that crime. I was always under the impression that a judicial figure would determine the punishment, least that's how it works where I am from.

3. I will not even ask about how the Supremacy clause would apply in this case.

Personally I would have done the same if faced with identical circumstances. If they treat me with respect I will return the favor. In the end you are doing your small part to chase down leads to try and solve a crime. The upside would be presenting an image of responsible private gun owners to 6 ATF agents to let them know that not everyone that owns a gun is a nut.

The only thing that bothers me about the account is the probabillity that the federal government does keep track of every transfered firearm indefinately which would remove the need for registration before a nationwide confiscation could take place.

Making up laws isn't gonna get you elected sheriff, saying your going to arrest officers on an investigation for trespass surely isn't going to get you the FOP nomination. You need to take a step back and think about a thing or two if your going to pursue this sheriff thing for real.

And yes, for a situation like this, I would come to bat for you as your Sheriff (I know you live just inside Philly, but I am using this as an example only). If someone is tresspassing on your property without a warrant, and I got the call, I would throw them in the county jail for 24 hours (ATF or not). Seems like they were bullying you, even if only passively (6 ATF guys with Glocks)!

Besides, I really hate Glocks!
What would you have suggested that your Deputy's do when Feds simply said Bite Me! and walked back to their cars and left. Come on Dragonofpa don't make it hard for us to volunteer for your upcoming election campaign. Just kidding.

For me to carry in the open would be insane in this area, I would get to know all the police and mabey the inside of their cars,,
What is it like out there in the country??
PB
so they wanted to see your 9mm. you showed them it. it appeared new. they left. what if it looked recently shot. arrested you for the shooting?

they can tell by looking at the gun that it wasn't a ballistic match to the bullet in the police officer.

that makes no sense.
