I personally would tend to avoid doing this. This will provide an opportunity for you to be told "Just don't bring your firearm". It's clear this is a "request", not law, but remember who we're dealing with here. The law clearly addresses this issue, and we know that lockboxes in some quantity are available. If they are unprepared to handle the situation, shame on them.
I agree with Pa. Patriots suggestion to simply declare your firearm and ask how they wish to proceed. When I went to the Capitol, they did ask me to remove mine from my holster. It was cleared before being stored. As we've seen with many things, policies vary greatly from county to county, and even from person to person at a given location.
I personally made a mistake when checking mine at the Capitol. When asked to remove it from the holster and lay it on the belt, I did so. Then the guard took it and cleared it. That won't happen again. If you want it out of the holster, fine.
I will clear the firearm myself (after indicating to them I am doing so). I won't lay it down for them while it is still loaded.
