Default What does your LTCF say for 'Reason to Carry'?

Some of my family members were talking about this awhile back. I applied for and received my LTCF about 3 years ago. When I applied at the Lycoming County Sheriff's Office, I specifically remember marking 'Reason For a License to Carry Firearms' as Self Defense. When I received my permit, it is marked as 'General Use' under Reason to Carry. I was told by the lady at the desk that they were no longer issuing permits for Self Defense anymore. That they were all issued as General Use. My uncles and brother were told the same thing.

Is this legal? Its a little late now, but should I have done something about it? Is there anything I can do about it now?

Not like its a big deal, just curious. I guess in a couple years when I renew I will make damn sure that it is marked Self Defense before I leave the Sheriff's Office.

Got mine from Monroe County and it has "Self Defense" checked.

Zef, if you can find some legal document that excludes self-defense from "general use", I'd be concerned... since you are not likely to find such documentation, I wouldn't worry about it.

We've discussed this here before and it's amazing the different "reasons" that can be found on permits. The thing that amazed me the most is the fact that the permit forms/process is not uniform across the state.

My old one said "Self Defense" and "Sport". The one in my pocket right now says "Protection"... I didn't even choose that wording, when I renewed, that's what "they" inserted. It doesn't matter what is printed on the card. Don't sweat it.

Mine has "Protection" on it..

It really doesn't matter what is marked on it, the law makes no legal difference in the reasoning for having the license.

Mine says protection. As others stated I would not worry what the reason on the card is.

Just seems odd that the Sheriff's Office can change the reason from the information you provided them. Kinda like, "Well, this guys wants his permit so he can hunt with it, but I think he should have it to collect guns. Thats what I will put on his permit"

Just sounds fishy...

That law was recently changed and you now can carry a pistol for self defense while hunting.

Mine almost said NOYFB, but i just circled self-defense because I didn't want to explain to the sheriff what that meant.

I haven't hunted in probably 20 years... Are you saying that there is a SEPARATE License to Carry Firearms that is specific to hunting?

As far as I understand it, there's only one License to Carry Firearms, and the one I have in my pocket doesn't have the word "for ________" on it.
There IS a space (#6) on it that says "reason to carry"... however, I do not believe that you are limited to the "reason" stated there.

Think about it, if you listed "sport", do you think that you are now limited to target shooting? What's the definition of "sport"? Does it include hunting? If your license has "sport" on it, are you no longer permitted to use a handgun to defend your home? Must you use a rifle when something goes "bump" in the night?

I don't have "proof", but I think that at some point, someone wanted to "track" the reasons people were applying for "permits"... nothing more.
The only REASON that matters is that PA is a "shall issue" state, and you don't NEED a "reason"... it's your right.

You pass the background check, you get a LTCF... no "reason" needed.
