Question PLCF--CCW--CHL--Carry Permit??

I have a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms. I guess different States have other verbage. I have seen several names, abbreviations, etc. for a "license to carry." What does CCW actually stand for? Concealed Carry W.......? CHL is Concealed Handgun License? What other "names" do States have for a License? Just wondering. Oh, and do some States actually say "concealed" on their permits/licenses?

CCW - License to Carry a Concealed Weapon or Permit to Carry a Concealed Weapon.

there are lots of them. in addition to the one you mentioned, CPL (conealed pistol license) pops into mind.

For what it's worth, in many states offering CCW, "Concealed" MEANS CONCEALED! In VA for example, it is the responibility of the carrier to insure that the weapon is not visible in any way. This includes "printing".

In contrast, the simple License to Carry a Firearm, which we have in PA, has nothing to do with how we carry, merely that we are allowed to.

actually, a PA LTCF is specifically to allow you to carry concealed (though, as you correctly pointed out, having an LTCF does not mean you *have to* carry concealed). you don't need a license at all to open carry in PA (except in philly).

the text of the section of the PA UFA that creates LTCFs says:

Quote:
(a) Purpose of license -A license to carry a firearm shall be for the purpose of carrying a firearm concealed on or about one's person or in a vehicle throughout this Commonwealth.
i'm not really sure why the word "concealed" is not contained in the name of the license...it would certainly make more sense if it were.

With due respect, my reading of the law does not render the same interpretation.
Again, it is not a 'licence to carry concealed', although this is a provision. My understanding of the law is that one is required to be in possession of a licence to carry a firearm in order to lawfully do same.

I say tomato...

One thing upon which I am certain we would agree... It's better to have one, than not.

with all due respect to you as well, please show me where in PA law it says you have to have a license to open carry (other than in philly).

read the first post in this thread:

http://www.pafoa.org/forum/general-2...sheet-leo.html

it cites the case law that clearly states you do not need a license to open carry.

further, as i quoted above, in the PA UFA where it defines the license (this is the law that creates the very concept of a PA LTCF), it specifically states the purpose of the license is to carry a firearm concealed.

it's not just you say tomato...the law is what it is. it is an open and shut case.

i will grant you that the name of the license doesn't really make sense, but still the law says what it says (and, more to the point, doesn't say what it doesn't say regarding open carry).

(ETA: i do agree with you...might as well get one in any case.)
