Default Florida Permits and Charles Bronson

I received my non-resident permit from Florida about a month ago. I must admit that I didn't bother reading the pamphlet and letter that came with the ID card, and decided to read it "later". I verified my name and address and put the card in my wallet but didn't look very closely.

About a week ago, I'm at the range and a friend asks me if I ever received my Florida permit. I replied that I had and pulled out the card to show to him.

Then we both noticed it. My card is signed by the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services division of licenses. Charles H. Bronson. No B.S. My Florida permit is signed Charles Bronson. When I got home I checked out the pamphlet that came with my card. It is titled "Questions and Answers, Using Deadly Force in Self-Defense". The front has the title along with the State of Florida Seal and "Commissioner Charles H. Bronson".

Just had to share this in case anyone was sitting on the fence about getting a Florida permit.

"Our" Charles Bronson was born Charles Buchinsky and hailed from Ehrenfeld, Cambria County. Another famous Pennsylvanian.

Took about three months since it was out of state. I think if you apply in Florida it is quicker because they do the fingerprint / background check electronically.

Yep, used to know his brother. Think he had a place around Patton, PA?

Used to see him at flea markets on weekends. God, that was about 3 lifetimes ago!

Yeah, I love seeing Charles Bronson's name on every gas pump here. I smile every time. FWIW, in Florida you do not need a CC permit for your car. You don't need any kind of permit to carry a gun in your car; the car is an extension of your home. The gun does have to be encased, though. That could be a purse, a holster, glove box, etc.

How do one apply for a Florida non-resident Permit? Do you have to go to city hall in Hialeah? Whats the process?

Thanks,

Nyman

It is done entirely through the mail. There are firearms instructors etc offering to do the packet for you and combine it with training classes, but I just did everything myself. Took me a single afternoon once I had the application. The wait for the permit was just under three months.

First I went to the following website and ordered an application:

http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/onestop/

The things you will need are as follows:

1. You need to proof of firearms training. Florida does not certify people or make you take an "approved" class like some states. You can use almost any legitimate firearms training. That could be a hunter's safety class or an NRA sponsored class at your local gun club.

2. You need a set of fingerprints done by local law enforcement or other "approved" folks.

3. You need to fill out your application and get it notarized. Sometimes your local Fedex/Kinkos or UPS store will now offer notary services for two or three dollars.

4. You need to send in a check for the application fee and background check. The background fee is waved if you get your fingerprints done by LE in Florida. The application fee was around $75, and total was about $100+.

Hope that helps.
