I just received my LTCF from Delaware Co. On the front, under "reason to carry" it says "target shooting". If I am carrying my gun and I get stopped for any reason by police, do I have to prove that the reason I have the gun on me is that I'm going to the target range? In other words, is target shooting the only reason I can carry? Thanks

Now that's an Odd one, Mine says "Protection" Either your Sheriff is trying to find a Loop-Hole cause he's an anti-Gunner or it's an Oversight. I would question the Sheriff as to what it means. Others here know alot more than I, But I'd goto the source. TJ

Talk to the clerk at your county Sheriff's office and they will tell you what you need. In Northampton county they require the EIT tax receipt OR your voter registration card to PROVE local residency. Your drivers license is simply used a picture ID and the address must match your tax/voter information. For references you can use anyone in the country (I used a NJ resident) including someone that lives with you as long as you are not related (My live-in girlfriend used me). I have never heard of Northampton county calling a reference and your LTCF consistently arrives in three weeks (almost to the day). |

I agree 100% - go to the source - do not count on anything from an internet forum when it can be as important as this. In Northampton county I selected "Target" shooting on my LTCF application and my license came to me with "Self-Defense" specified. My girlfriend selected "Target" and "Self-defense" and hers came through with just "Self-Defense" specified. I honestly put target on mine because I was afraid they might reject or delay it if I simply put "self-defense", but I assume they know better and changed it to help me out in the case that is it used for self-defense? |

But, PA is an open carry state so I don't need anything to carry a gun while hunting!!! So why do I need a Sportsman's Permit?

to carry concealed you need it, but as you say you can carry open in pa. make sure your gun and ammo are in seperate parts of your vehicle, and locked, ie glove box and trunk. its still illegal to carry a loaded weapon while driving unless you have your LTCF.

Turns out that carrying, open or not, of a semi-automatic handgun during hunting season is illegal without the LTCF. Further one may only carry a handgun to hunt with the sportsman's permit. That's just the way it is.
