seriously though dude, countless conversations have been had on just about every gun forum on this subject. get ready to retract your above statement.
Im not going to bother posting links in this thread as that wasn't it's original intent, but if you want to do some googling there is data out there comparing .223/9mm/45/12ga00...birdshot would obviously penetrate less, but it's not really a defensive load.

seems strange to recommend weapons that overpenetrate more than ARs based on concerns of overpenetration.

Just for thread reference/consistency I got a gun cabinet for the closet so I can keep them secured in whatever condition I choose to keep them in.

Simple, effective.

I'd rather be alive AND not deaf. Note that while gunfire is loud outside, it is that much worse inside a small enclosed room.

Here's an idea: put in one earplug. That way you can still hear the BG, and after you end him you'll only be deaf in one ear.

I know you just said that you got a cabinet for the closet but just another suggestion.

Put hooks on the back of your bed/headboard toward you side of the bed. You can roll out of bed, reach behind it and grab your AR. Not sure about how to secure everything for your daughter though. I don't have kids so I really don't think about that stuff.

It takes longer to get the one earplug in than it does to slide on a pair of muffs.

Absolutely...they tend to need some wiggling to put in place. I added a nice set of electronic muffs to my Christmas list.

Well I told my wife what I'd been contemplating and she was rather enthused about the cabinet solution. She was upset about how I've been stowing my carbine but wasn't saying anything about it for some reason.

I'm glad to read that your wife is on board with your solutions. My wife was upset about how I had stowed away a long gun once... but she let me know about it quickly in a not-so-loving way!
