Hi Yoder,
You know, I placed an order with Cabelas yesterday for $400 worth of reloading equipment. I was going for the RCBS Rockchucker "supreme" kit, the carbide dies, a shell holder and the Hornady loading manual. When I started looking around for all the components, I decided to actually cancel the order until things started becoming more available. I saw thier SP primers had an estimated 1-2 weeks backorder. Is that an accurate estimate or is it more like 1-2 months? Matter of factly, all the components I wanted, bullets, powder and primers all were listed as backordered with estimated 1-2 weeks. I will probably reorder when things bounce back.. but everyone I ask has a different time frame of when that will be.

Primers are going to be 1-2 months, most likely 2. I wouldn't buy bullets from Cabelas they are too expensive. Check out www.berrysmfg.com or www.precisiondeltasales.com they both have free shipping and both probably have around a 1 month turn around depending on caliber. For reloading equipment check out midway usa. Most of their equipment is in stock and prices are competitive. I ordered primers from Cabelas thinking they are a huge company and will most likely get them in before smaller companies. I also figured they would eat the extra shipping costs for shipping multiple boxes due to backorders. Not sure about that yet, I'm waiting to see the invoice on my next shipment. I don't think this is going to get much better anytime soon, so I would either order it and wait or even buy some stuff the scalpers are selling on gunbroker. Even if you pay a little too much for reloading components, it's still cheaper than factory ammo.

I checked Midway for the equipment too... I decided to go with Cabelas because everything I wanted they had in stock. Midway was backordering the dies.. plus until July 20th, Cabelas was offering shipping for $5.
Not bad when you have a heavy press shipping. While I do agree that reloading is cheaper, I was trying to compare, not just money.. but what would get me shooting asap. You may have noticed in my other thread, I'm shopping for a .22 With the equipment and the components, I was looking at speanding +$600 for half that I can buy a .22 pistol and 500 rounds and start shooting tomorrow. I will definitly go down the reloading path.. but why buy the press and let it sit there for 2 months.. you know? Incidentally, I wasn't gonna buy the bullets there either... they are indeed expensive. Another member had suggested.. hmm... I think it was Montana Gold? $200 for 4k bullets. But again... a month on the wait list. I feel for all you reloaders.. at least during these times anyway. Gotta be frustrating.

What I did was snoop around local gun shops and Walmarts slowly buying ammo when I could find it. I got lucky at Walmart one day and picked up 2k rds of 9mm for $8/box. While I was doing this I ordered all of my reloading equipment, bullets, primers. I also found some primers and powder locally. By the time I ran out of ammo all of my reloding equipment and supplies were in. I have enough to reload about 5k 9mm and about 2k .45's right now. This was a big financial investment up front, but now I should be set for the next 6 months to a year. I have always been able to find ammo, you just have to look around til you find a place that's not trying to screw you.

Thats a smart approach. Too bad any 9mm ammo is twice that price now.. if in stock at all. $8 a box.. you likely cleared the shelf huh?
I have to laugh at what that looks like... imagine seeing someone just scooping boxes of ammo off the shelf with both arms into a shopping cart almost giddy with joy! LOLOL

Here's an update on shipping and hazardous materials fees. Cabelas only charged me 1 $40 hazardous materials fee and $16.95 for shipping. It came in three boxes and I got 5k small and 2k large pistol primers. Took about 2 months total to get everything.

I though the hazmat fee was only $20. I ordered 3k of small rifle primers and 1k of small pistol primers and also 1lb of varget. I hope i don't get charged double for shipping.

Norm,
It is usually hazmat 20 dollars per box shipped. gene |

Maybe it was $20 hazmat, but they only charged me once even though it shipped in three boxes. Same with shipping.
