A while back I threaded about trying to make some 7.62X45mm brass for my CZ52 rifle.
I am using 6.5 carcano brass as my parent case to form from, as it has everything I need except the .441in base. The 6.5 Carcano has a .445in base. I looked through my Cartridges of the World book, and found that the 30-40 Krag gave me the neck and shoulder measurements I needed, but was too long. Soooooooooooooooo, what I did, was got a set of 30-40 Krag dies, and cut the bottom off the full-length sizing die, and then ran it over the 6.5 Carcano brass. It worked perfectly, although the 1st die I cut too short, and didn't like the fact that it didn't touch the shell holder as all my other Lee dies do, and could possibly change the shoulder height measurement too easily. Sooooooooooooooo, I order a couple more full length die bodies from Lee, and made anothe forming die, and this time, I got it a tad too long, but was able to grind it down a thousanth or so at a time, and got it to work juuuuuust right. Now, my NEXT problem cropped up, which I have yet to overcome. Although the 7.62X45mm site I went to says to make the new brass from 6.5 Carcano, I ASSUMED (my problem) that the brass would chamber ok, even being .004 to big at the base, but, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I took the 1st full length die I made from the 30-40 Krag die and cut the top off of it, so that it had no shoulder to deal with, and the base measurement on this is .441., what I was looking for. The problem, however, is that it will not size the base of the brass at the solid web, at least not on the press I have. I may try this on a strong "D" press, and see if it can be done. If not, then I need to find a way to turn the base of the brass to .441, which I hate to try to do. The only other option is to possibly hand ream the chamber on the CZ52 rifle with a 30-40 Krag chamber reamer, a thousanth at a time, until it accepts my Carcano base brass, as I stated earlier, the shoulder measurements, etc. are the same, or reasonable enough to fire form, since the neck to base dimensions are correct. Anyway, that's where I am with this cartridge. Any suggestions? I may go ahead and have a Mauser chambered for this cartridge also, using the 30-40 Krag reamer. It would be a tad more powerful than the 7.62X39mm, but not as potent as the 7.62 NATO (.308), which is 7.62X51mm. It would be a nice target round that I could shoot all day, and probably ok enough to shoot the 168 grain match bullets. |
