Ammo storage, why does everyone like cans?
Whats new and great in the area of ammo storage outside of a safe? I used ammo cans to keep some of grandpa's stuff after he passed but it turned into a really big mess, half of the stuff rusted to and through the cans, most of it had to be thrown away. I didn't get to check on it that often as it was in Grandma's basement. Now that I have a couple thousand rounds on the way to my house how should I store it? I was thinking plastic bins, even the green Cabela's bins with some sort of dessicant? Is there really any advantage to a metal can?

correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the benefits of the metal cans is that they'll be safer in the event of a fire. It should contain the ammo if it starts to detonate.

Maybe placing the cans on some sort of raised surface to keep them away from moisture bearing concrete.
I think if your cans are rusting out, you might have a moisture problem that should be taken care of as well with a sump pump or dehumidifier.

Re: Ammo storage, why does everyone like cans?
My ammo will be in a finished basement, the stuff I lost was not. I was about 13 then and did my best to store it but the basement flooded...so...
I don't know about the fire. Thats some pretty thin metal, I know the pressure isn't directed and therefore not as great but I would like to see someone with 1st hand experiance with this. I've been to plenty of fires with ammo cooking off and no one has been hurt, but I've never been on overhaul and seen the remains of the ammo either...
In terms of storing powder I would think putting it in a sealed vessel in the event of a fire would be a bad idea, create a bomb. How pissed are you gonna be if you die before the Zombie Apocalypse comes? - - IANAL

Re: Ammo storage, why does everyone like cans?
My reasons ...
1. Longevity: the ammo cans are air tight, so this should hope with storage of the ammo
2. They have handles, so they are easy to carry around.
3. Interesting to have.
4. Easy to organize ammo

Only big reason I could think of is the metal can won't shatter when dropped....other then that plastic will do everything the metal cans will.

Re: Ammo storage, why does everyone like cans?
Honestly as was stated before good cans are water tight for a long time. I do agree that sticking some dessicant in each can is not going to hurt if your storing the ammo somewhere that it sees a temp change constantly.
If its surplus US military then depending what military tests if failed to end up as surplus it will keep for a long time. All US military small arms are given a waterproof test among others prior to being put into the system for use.
As for containing a casing rupture yea for smaller rounds I can see that working but you also have to take the inner packaging into it. If its on strippers or other packaging then its not as likely to cause another round to go off as it would just being loose in a can with other exposed primers. And even at that rate there is nothing to contain the casing and build pressure."Remember the first rule of gunfighting ... have a gun." Jeff Cooper

Swift temp changes no matter if in plastic or steel will cause condensation inside can.
A humid basement going from warm to cold will sweat inside.
If enough dessicant is in there, That will help.

Re: Ammo storage, why does everyone like cans?
with the above mentioned, the metal cans seem to be easier to handle the weight of the ammo, wont flex like some plastics.
they're selling make believe and we don't buy that here
