Default 7.62 x 39 ammo questions

I researched and only difference is the long range reports. .223 is better at long range and 7.62 is equal to it up to about 200 yards. 7.62 is approx. $5.00 for 20 and .223 is about $18 to 19 for 20. So my questions is, why isn't 7.62 ammo more popular in the AKs? Am i missing something
