Default Best & Worst 7.62X39 for AR-15 Conversion

I'm getting a 7.62X39 upper for my Busmaster. Have any of you folks found the best brand of ammo to feed it? Any warning flags about some brands would also be appreciated.

Just about everything besides wolf and brownbear are expensive as shit to shoot in 7.62x39mm. May I ask why you are thinking of a 7.62x39mm upper? Just isn't as cheap as it once was, and its price compared to 223 is getting closer and closer.

XD45,

Best reason in the world... I want one:-)

I guess its the same reason I put the glitzy wheels on my Pontiac when the factory ones were fine.

Seriously, I look at the prices on some of the steel cased stuff and it does come out cheaper than comparable .223 ammo.

I have no experiance with AR type rifles but did have a CZ527 carbine and tested softpoint 7.62x39 ammo by shooting through a gallon jug full of water and into a stack soaked paper at 150 yards and the only reliable SP was the 123gr Winchester. I tested wolf, barnaul, remington, winchester and federal, If you ever want an expanding bullet the only factory load that reliably expands at 150 yds is the winchester softpint.

You might want to try the Hornady V-Max, 123 grain bullet from Grafs.
It's .311 or .312 diameter.
I use it in my 527 with 25.0 grains of #1680.
Do NOT know how well it expands.
Thanks.

I quit reloading years ago but Hornady had a reputation back then for good expansion and I would be supprised if they didn't open up, if I wasn't so cheap I would have tested their factory loads when I ran the other tests.

The original post was ment for factory ammo and guys who just go hunting and shooting once in a while.
