Default Inexpensive .22 magnum ammo

I've got a summer full of trips to the range with my daughter and nephews and need to find inexpensive .22 magnum ammo. I may need .22LR also if I can convince my better half that a Ruger 10/22 is worth the price.

I'd like to get my hands on at least 500 rounds, I'm tired of dropping $9 a wal-mart for 50 rounds over and over again.

Where do you shop, either online or catalog/mail order, for cheap, fun .22 mag ammo?

I don't think there is such a thing.
.22 mag and .17 are the biggest ripoffs in ammo.

Unfortunately right now all I have is a .270 and a .22 mag, so until I can squeeze blood out of a stone for a 10/22, I have to use what I've got.

I'd lump 50 BMG in that biggest ripoff category too. If you really want to see ripoffs, look at some of the "safari" ammo like 700 Nitro. It's over $70 a round.

I love my .22 mag rifle, but the ammo truly is silly expensive considering it's esentially a long .22 Long Rifle. I get mine from Natchez or Midway. I usually order other stuff so the shipping fee doesn't add to the sting too much. A dopey justification, I know.

$9 for 50 rounds isn't that bad. You can do better at CheaperThanDirt.com, but I don't know if the savings will be eaten up in shipping. Then again, there's no sales tax so if you're buying in bulk, maybe you can save a few bucks.

At $9 a box you are doing good. I priced some over the weekend and it was $9.49 to $28 for 50, with a lot of it being around $12. Getting it on line does not save a lot because of shipping.

Depending on Firearm you can shoot 22LR out a of a 22 mag, same as you can shoot 22 shorts out a 22LR, this was very common practice years ago. You will loose accuracy because the bullet travels some distance before engaging rifling.

If you are just shooting off hand what's the big deal, I shoot 22 LR out of my 22 mag revolver because of the outrageous cost of 22 mags. I also have shot 22 shorts in that same 22 mag revolver.

WARNING NOTE using a 22LR in a 22 mag is possible BUT it depends on the firearm and I would not do it with any autoloader 22 mag period. I also would highly recommend asking a gun smith before attempting to try it with your firearms

I'd advise against using 22lr in a 22 magnum chamber, but thats just me. A 22 magnum case is larger in diameter than a 22lr case. That would mean that firing a 22lr in a 22mag chamber would mean a loose fit in the chamber. Not to mention a big jump from the case to the rifling.

The gun in question is a Marlin 782 bolt-action rifle. I dont think I could get 22lr to feed correctly from the magazine. Also I'd be really concerned about chamber slop, especially as teens would be shooting it.

Thanks for the suggestion though! It wasn't something I had considered till you mentioned it.
