Well this is kinda splitting hairs and I'm sure both are very good stuff but I'm trying to understand the difference between HST and Hydra-Shok. They are both Federal LE Tactical. Basically the HST is this....
http://www.le.atk.com/general/federa...cticalhst.aspx And the Hydra-Shok is this... http://www.le.atk.com/general/federa...ydra-shok.aspx But damned if I can understand the difference in laymans terms. The Hydra seems to usually be priced a bit higher but I don't hardly hear/read anyone mentioning it .....but I'm always reading folks talking about HST. Should I just get HST stuff and forget about it? why? I am asking for purposes of deciding what to possibly purchase..but more than anything for the education. As I say above...I'm sure it's all good....but it's the meaningful difference...if any..that I'm trying to understand. Thanks. |

The HST is a new design which is, according to reports, better than the older Hydrashok. There a time when the Hydrashok was king of the hill...but that was a long time ago.

I use the HST based on the expansion tests I've seen, they have the best. I think the whole idea of the HP bullets is they stay where you hit, not travel thru and out. Expansion is important for that concept.

HST = Hydra Shok Technology. If you look at the bottom corner of the box above it says HST2. From how it was explained to me this is the newest latest version of of the bullet. Also I think some of the new 20 round boxes that replaced the clear plastic packaging do not have the post any longer.
I have also noticed that you can get the LE (50 rounds) at some shops for what you pay for 20 at others.

For the .45, some folks have had feeding issues with the HSTs so I'm going with Speer Gold Dots in the .45 for now. For the OP, if you want to try a box or two of HST, you can get them reasonably here: http://ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/i...low-point-ammo Your next question will be what bullet weight and to +P or not to +P. ![]() What gun(s) will you be carrying them in? |

Thanks...to you and other responders...I would have thought the Hydrashoks were better/newer given they are a bit more expensive. Wonder why?

9mm -147gr -mostly for XDSC9..but also CZ75b and Walther P1 .40S&W - 165gr - XD Service .38spl - 129 +P - Smith 642 with option to use in my 357's of course .357 - only comes in one flavor..158gr I believe...for GP100, Blackhawk, SP101 .45SACP 230gr - Kimber TLE RL2 As for +P or not....except for the 38spl I've been thinking to shy away from those simply to avoid having to think about what I am shooting in what. I suspect all of the above...except maybe the P1 ....would handle +P without any issue. The thinking..which I don't feel overly strong about is..the +P just adds a bit more "wear and tear" on the weapon that isn't really necessary as the non +P versions should get the job done just fine. I could be convinced to go with +P in some calibers...not afraid of the recoil as I have been using Corbons in my .40XD and they seem to have quite a kick. Thanks! PS. Just for the record I don't own ANY of the above guns since I lost them in all in that fishing accident we were all in..... |

Also, the HST comes in both regular and bonded flavors; the latter being preferred for penetrating barriers such as windshield glass. The reason why the old, outdated Hydra-shok is still around is that it still retains a lot of selling power based on history and lore and because a number of LE agencies apparently haven’t made the change to one of the newer, better performing designs (Gold Dots, Ranger Talon, HST etc…). The reason why HST is so cheap is because it is made using a newer, less expensive process as compared to other “legacy” hollowpoints. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...8/ai_112685770 Quote:
