Default .38 Spl. Sellier & Bellot Cracked Cases w/Pic

Has anyone else had problems with Sellier & Bellot ammo?

    I was at DCFS today (Before the Rain). I had my S&W 2206, S&W Mod. 36, S&W Mod. 15-3 and a Ruger Speed 6.

All the guns functioned perfectly, however, I noticed that after shooting 5 rounds out of my 15-3 I had trouble ejecting the spent cases. I used some additional presure and was finally able to get them out.

At first I thought the chambers were getting dirty but then I saw the following.

    What do you think?

Just that one round may have been the problem, however I would get the cylinder of the 15-3 inspected by a competent gun smith. S&B ammo has never given me any problems so I will not bash them! After it is inspected and passes, shoot the ammo again. This was the only round correct?

DCrawler, It was just one case and I too have used this ammo before without any issues.

I was initially concerned with a possible bulged chamber but this gun has had nothing but factory ammo used in it and I've been shooting it without a single problem for 5 years.

In hopes that this is ammo related and not the gun I just spent some time searching the internet for others that may have had this problem and it appears that it does occur. In fact I presume if I look long enough there would be other manufactures with similar issues.

Thanks for taking the time to look and for providing your advice,

I had the entire bottle neck of a S&B casing break off and lodge inside my SKS when I had it. Never bought that shit again.

Every manufacturer has a run of brittle brass now & then. Some companies more than others.

It was either a improper mix of copper and zinc, or it wasn't annealed properly.

Oversized chambers can cause it too.

When S& B just started coming into the US after the cold war i had a .40 cal S&B blew up in the chamber of my Brand new SIGMA, it didnt faze my SIGMA , i went on to shoot the rest of the ammo and have shot many rounds of S&B since then and has never had another problem with them , any manufacturer can have a bad batch now and then.

Its the nature of shooting, just always wear your safety glasses.

I probably get one case split out of every 100-200 out of my wheel guns.

I reload, and I can attest that S&B makes pretty good brass as far as I am concerned.

If it bothers you, mark that particular chamber (I have used black magic marker) and keep going. If it happens again, and it is the same chamber, then you "may" have a problem you want to get checked out.

More likely a "routine" case split from one bad piece of brass and nothing to worry about.

S&B makes good ammo, on par with most of the other ammo sold. I've had splits from every maker out there to include Remington, Winchester and Federal. If you shoot it's going to happen.

    So you're saying splits happen?

Thank you, I'll be here all day.
