Default Re: Weak case or Double charge

Shooting Times did a story a while back about very weak charges doing things like what happened to you. Acccording to the story a short charge will flash and do strange things. If it did not feel like a hot load that may have been what happened. It does sound like a "WTF". Glad your OK.

I saved the mag and the damaged brass. I shot the rest of them with no mag in the gun just in case I had another problem. Nothing else happened. I have called Springfield and they said to send the gun in If I want to but I have had the pistol checked by other gunsmiths and they agreed that it was weak brass or a double load. I escaped that one for sure.

JOC, any chance you didn't seat a primer all the way, and had a raised primer go off under recoil? To be honest, that doesn't look much like a double charge. It looks like the round in the mag discharged.

Edit: Though having read the rest of the thread, I have now learned how a double charge or weak case can cause the top round to fire. Learn something every day.... I thought a double charge usually blew out the bottom of the mag and the grip panels.

From what I can figure When The unsupported part of the case blew the force went down into to the mag and set the next round off. When that round went off it did not have enough force to push the bullet far so all the gas went in to the grips and blowing them in 4 pieces.

I think it was some bad Glock brass.

I've seen both ,and double charge usually shreds the offending round pretty hard....not just blowing out the rim on one side. They also tend to mess up ejectors, extractors and other internal parts. This is pretty mild in comparison. A half blown out rim is usually a relatively warm load ran through brass that has had the rim stretched too far..too many times.
