Default Re: .40s&w loads..

I find the 165 and 155 work best for me. Call me old school but I use Unique, 231 and Bullseye the most in 9mm, .40 and 45acp, Mike.

PS...I have used AA #5 in the .40 and it works well also.

180 or 200gr anything over Titegroup and CCI 400 small rifle primers.

My most common load is a 200gr Rainier plated bullet over 4.3 grains of Titegroup.

OAL is 1.195 which is longer than most guns can handle so start below that power measure. Reducing OAL increases pressure, but not as much with Titegroup as other powders.

When I want hot loads I use HS6. That's a whole 'nother story.

Why do you use small rifle primers versus small pistol primers?

Because faster powders feel softer......

But ....faster powders have more pressure and small rifle primers have a harder cup and won't go flat as easily (better for higher pressure).

And.....if you have a mainspring combo that will light a CCI small rifle primer...it will light ANY primer.....they're hard.

Plus.....they work well in the AR!

My pet .40 load:

5.0 grains of Unique behind a 180 grain Rainier plated FMJ/truncated cone with a CCI #500 small pistol primer.

COL = 1.130"

I like to load them long, within 0.005" of the max. I've never had any reliability issues with .40's loaded that long. YMMV in your guns though.

Although I've never fired this over a chrony, I think it's just a little lighter than standard factory ammo.

I've been shooting those rainier bullets for my 10mm, can't really beat the price and they seem pretty darn accurate too..

I have shot a combined total of over 20,000 .40 and .45 caliber Rainier plated bullets through various firearms and have not had a single issue with them.

I originally bought them because I mostly shoot Glocks, but my other guns like them too.

So what's your pet 10mm load?

i only have a g29 right now, my 2nd next gun is going to be a 10mm 1911 style(getting a stag next).. but i usually load it up with unique or bluedot and a LP magnum primer just to watch everyone stop shooting and look at my gun

Cool. I was thinking of starting with Unique. I'm going to keep them pretty light. I have a G29, G20 and Delta Elite and I want to make a load that will work in all three.
